Some dogs enjoy riding and some people enjoy making their dogs happy. Get over it. When you are in charge of the world, you can tell the rest of us what to do.
Fair enough and in the mean time I can think that anyone who does it is an idiot.

RE Underseat storage: I've seen someone use a metalic looking car windsheild sunscreen. It was about a third of an inch thick with a bit of padding sanwiched between two layers of some sort of soft tin foil looking stuff. It worked well.

I have a special carrier for my dog to ride in the back. If my dog dies most likely I am dead too.
Protein bars definitely don't go in the pet carrier, they get all mushy.

I agree. I use it to keep food hot.

When hauling a lot of groceries, I re-sort bags by what can go in the pet carrier and what goes in the top case or hangs from the bag hook.

I hope I'm not offending anyone if I respond to the thermal issue related to the pet carrier instead of sharing my pet stories

This link has been brought to my attention, and I found at least three promising products there:

Coolmat
Cool it mat
Thermo guard
Heat barriers in general.

One of the problems is, how to apply them and still make the pet carrier fit into the opening (or: are they equally effective if applied inside the carrier?)

Food for thought...

There is really a distinction to be made that you seem to be ignoring, Jess.

When someone makes a decision about how to live their own life that jeopardizes no-one else, then others should mind their own business.

However, if someone -- in the name of individuality (or selfishness) -- puts others at risk, then it is the responsibility of the community at large to set them straight. It's a basic tenet of civilized society.

Even if you insulate it,
what self-respecting cat is going to allow himself/herself to be stuffed in there?

My guess is that a certain foolish owner
will get their eyes scratched out during the cat's rapid exit

I would hope that if "civilized society" was going to take it upon themselves to "set me straight" about something, they would be civilized enough to do so in a way that didn't involve calling me an idiot.

Besides, in a scooter crash, I reckon a dog would fare better than a human. More feet, and a better sense of landing upright from what I can gather

Ok, sorry to all that I offended, it's a subject that I tend to get a bit unrationally worked up about. Guess I really need to learn to keep my opinion to myself when it comes to pets or at least not lose my cool about it. I really am generally a mellow and polite guy.

Back to the OP, anyone know how hot it actually gets under the seat?

Just to put my comments in perspective: I've never called anyone an idiot, and I wouldn't, regardless of their transgression. I was responding directly to Jess' comment, keeping in mind that he has previously referred to me as "full of shit" because I had criticized the behavior of a rider in Paris whose self-made video of riding that clearly put other HUMANS in jeopardy was posted here.

As to behavior that puts animals in jeopardy... I'm a bit tormented about how not to be hypocritical on that one, seeing as how I'm an omnivore.

I have a dog a cat and two chickens and I am a vegetarian, I force my animals to be vegetarians as well does that make me a bad person or am I a bad person for other reasons.

Onto the topic, when the 300 came out with those holes in the cowl a lot of people scuffed at their use but after riding for several hours on my GT, I like to remove the pet carrier and let the engine cool off as I take a break especially on hot days as I have often thought it gets very hot and is held in there with no where to go. I think to eliminate this vents could be cut out the back so the hot air could escape above the singnal lights. Could look cool too, if done right. Maybe a 50mm hole with a hole saw and a nice chrome vented cover to finish it off might solve the problem.
I just had a look at the bike and you could just take the signal lights out put a little grill in the hole and add a couple of aftermarket lights onto the plastic panels. little chrome bullets or similar

I believe it was more generally directed than that, sorry if you took that personally. I stand by my statement, though: it is not for us to tell Parisians how to drive any more than it would be appropriate for Parisians to tell US how to drive.

As for pets and risk, I summarily reject the notion that we should live our lives (and our pets lives) solely according to the presence of risk. Dogs ride in cars all the time with no safety belt. Or the back of a pickup. Dogs go to the beach and run in the surf where they might get swept up in the undertow.

Might as well just sit the dog on the couch and let him get fat, then.

The same logic that says you shouldn't involve your dog in anything with any risk whatsoever could also be used to argue that you shouldn't let your kids ride a bicycle, or go swimming, or ride a skateboard, or do anything with a risk component. Might as well sit the kids on the couch and let them get fat.

Oh, wait...

Sorry Jess I hate to be the one to break the news
we have always told people what to do and we have always been told what to do, we all do it. Parents, schools, employers, states, Once we have heard it enough and most agree, they make it a law. Like seatbelts or helmets or smoking in public soon to come putting dogs on scooters, I think some refer to all this as progress, others as civilized, some as dictatorial, depends on where you stand on it and how you justify that position. Watch what you complain about cause soon it will be law. Dogs in pickups is outlawed in some places now so are dogs on the beach. Too many rules, too many signs...............start the revolution.

In some cases, the laws apply only to dogs...California and Massachusetts require all animals to be restrained or contained when being transported on a load-bearing part of the vehicle, unless the space is enclosed." from http://www.cga.ct.gov/2009/rpt/2009-R-0203.htm

Now my dogs do ride on the Smrfmobile but they do it from within a VERY securely strapped on metal dog crate that is covered. Why covered..so rocks don't hit them in the head like a bullet!

If people want to let dogs hang out of the windows than at least throw protection on the dog...they sell Doggles (yes that is the brand name) which are UV protectant (save those corneas like you would for yourself I hope) and shatter proof so it will deflect small rocks that could blind/kill the dog. And have them seatbelted in via a harness. I've known people who's dogs have leapt out of moving vehicles to chase a critter.

Do what you want but you don't have to be ignorant while doing it.

Crazy, not stupid.

But you should.

Try treat training, don't just jam her head into them and expect her to like it. Give treat through the straps...put treat further away each successive so she has to go through the straps to get her treat..rewarding with praise and treats. Eventually she'll like having them slipped onto her head...it's a plus to do this outside on sunny day so doggie will see benefit of wearing them.

Laughing emoticon I was just kidding. I don't try to put sunglasses on my dog. When I see wolves and coyotes wearing them, perhaps I'll let her get a pair, too.

Let's consider this from the pet's perspective

* If they're terrified and will jump off if they can, where's the fun in that?
That would be my cats' reaction, I expect

* But if they (& you) enjoy the experience, where's the harm?
Most of the the dogs I see with their tongues flapping in the wind
appear to be in ecstasy
