Playing Beatles Pandora station in my classroom right now. Everybody's got something to hide 'xept for me and my monkey just came on. It's gotta be the first punk song written a good ten years before the movement started.

Have you guys heard "Death"? A "punk" band from detroit doing very punk songs in the early 70s? This is the earliest punkest sounding band I can think of. There were only a handful of ridiculously rare 45s until someone put out a tribute LP recently which I highly recommend. Last I heard, Mos Def was going to be making a movie about them.

They've gotten a lot of hype of the last year. Articles in NYtimes, SF Weekly and that sort. Haven't picked up the album yet though

Start at the beginning with the New York City-CBGBs bands:
Dictators
NY Dolls
Blondie
Televison
Patti Smith
Richard Hell
Johnny Thunders
Dead Boys (technically a Detroit band)

and the English first wave stuff
Clash
Sex Pistols
Damned
Sham 69

These will give you a good start to the various branches and varieties of punk.

From there you'll may want to check out the early LA bands (x, Germs, etc), Hardcore (Minot Threat, Black Flag, Circle Jerks), British Hardcore (GBH), Post-punk (Killing Joke, Gang of Four, PiL). As you can see the possibilities of a 3 chord progression are endless.

Love it! I don't meet that many Wire fans any longer, most I knew were in San Diego funny enough. Long ago there was a band called The Frame in SD tat had a heavy Wire influence.
In fact I'd drink with them at the Live Wire in North Park iirc.

That's awesome. Proto punk is the term, I believe. Thrown around a lot to describe the pre-punk Detroit bands. MC5, the Stooges, etc.

You think it's that much?
I remember him slagging Liam Gallagher for never actually going to Man City games, so it's a bit ironic that he's essentially the same way when it comes to his scooters. But what do I know I've never had a chauffeur.

I have always said when I win the lottery and retire, I'll take a trip around the world visiting all the music related landmarks. Wherever I go I always make a point of visiting if there is one nearby.

This photo and the one in my Avatar were taken in Johua Tree, at the site of the Gram Parsons shrine and the site of his cremation.
