1994... I was in Paris as I was dating a girl that was there for work. She wanted to go see Blues Traveller. OK... she was cute so, sure. The band that headlined? The Tragically Hip. The entire night (and that sad excuse of a relationship) were justified by the brilliance of the Hip who headlined. Particularly, the closing number which was, Grace Too. The version below was on SNL a few months later... (The Paris version - maybe 50 people in a tiny club - I saw was truly almost a religious experience.) The power of music, yeah?

Back in MY day, we didn't have no autotune. Our singers just screamed into a microphone until their voices were so hoarse you thought you were listening to Burl Ives. Then they'd just scream louder, till they ran out of oxygen and had to be dragged unconscious off the stage and then we'd all go home.

Back in MY day, we didn't have no "click tracks". Our drummers were always drunk if they even showed up at all. It was up to the rest of the band to keep up with him no matter what he did. He'd pound away on the drums, never caring what anyone else was doing because he couldn't hear 'em anyways, until he blacked out and had to be dragged unconscious off the stage and then we'd all go home.

Back in MY day, we didn't have no "dancers" on stage. We were our own dancers and we called it a mosh pit. We'd thrash around swinging our fists at each other until we were knocked ... actually I don't know what happened, 'cause I was usually unconscious by then.

We were nothin' but a bunch of screaming' drunken fist swingers, but that's the way it was and we LIKED it!

Thanks for that Seamus! I saw them live in 81? at the Arlington theatre in Santa Barbara, CA. The County Bowl was rained out so they move it to the Arlington. Third row seating. Wall of Voodoo opened for them. Burned into my brain forever and so flippin awesome! Great times...
