I watched all four episodes of the documentary series STAX: Soulsville, U.S.A. on the plane from SFO to LHR today. Once I started, I couldn't stop!
As soon as I got in my rental, I hooked up my phone to Bluetooth and put this on... |

And then as their record sales flagged they recorded "The Flame", a song written by someone else for someone else that Rick Nielsen hated so much he destroyed the demo tape and walked out. Good it worked out for them. |

Even back to my last post about Cheap Trick, their hit "I Want You to Want Me" didn't even really gain traction until the live version from Bodokan. Because they were performing it live there was an energy to it that wasn't in the studio recording, and people noticed. I've always had a theory that in any audio recording there's more than we perceive. And when you record a live performance there's something intangible that gets in there, a fingerprint that captures not only the sound but a moment in time. Oh, and I saw this at a secondhand shop last night. Would look cool in the basement. Oh, for the record, a friend of mine in Florida saw Justin Hayward in concert on April 20th. Still performing.

Bob Dylan...... The movie "A Complete Unknown" is worth a look and reminded me of what a character he was. His tunes still ring true for me.

Never even heard of Eurovision until two weekends ago when I was visiting Finland and my hosts insisted on watching the finals. This one didn't win, but it pretty well captures the essence of the event. There is also a Will Ferrell comedy about Eurovision from a few years ago that i started to watch but didn't make it to the end yet. To be clear, I am not suggesting this is particularly good music. Just found the whole phenomenon to be interesting in an anthropological kind of way.

ColinBelgium I have no idea how to post a video from my phone, but a couple years ago i was driving down from Portland, Oregon to Virginia City, Nevada to do a dirtbike race. It's just a little over a 600 mile drive, so i stopped in Winnemucca, Nevada for a short break from driving. I pull into an empty gravel parking lot and a few minutes later some old punk/goth guy walks into the scene. My CD player was cranking out Front 242 - First In-First Out at the time. I ended up taking a quick 15 second video of the guy doing whatever in the heck he was doing. I guess it's one of those things that you just had to be there. I feel that the video is internet worthy though. What i was listening to at the time…
