He paid absolutely zero attention to me except at the very end of the clip when out of the blue he pulled out his middle finger and gave me the bird! I think what made it so awesome was that i had already been driving for 9+ hours. I was totally stoked on the guy. But from what i've heard, events like this aren't out of the ordinary in Winnimucca, Nevada… |

The Peter Hook/Joy Division/New Order show was amazing!
Such high energy for a concert of mostly over 50s fans and a frontman 69 years old. We had a fabulous time. I danced so hard my knees hurt for the ride home and all yesterday! When did I get this old?

I didn't see anything posted anywhere else, but I thought it should be mentioned.
I'm not a fan of The Beach Boys. My Dad is a huge fan. I remember a trip to fFlorida one year where we listened to "Endless Summer" there and back on 8-Track. Lot's of irony there. I haven't intentionally listened to The Beach Boys since. However, the impact Brian Wilson had on music and his absolute genius songwriting can't be overlooked. We lost one of the greats yesterday. R.I.P., Brian. ![]() Brian Wilson, the troubled genius behind The Beach Boys, has died at age 82 Quote: Brian Wilson, who co-founded the iconic California band The Beach Boys and turned teen pop into a poetic, modernist musical form, has died at age 82. "We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world," Wilson's family wrote in a statement on his website Wednesday. The most frequently invoked description of Wilson's music came from the artist himself when, playing on a phrase coined by Phil Spector, he declared that his goal was to write a "teenage symphony to God." Grounded in dreams of an idealized youth, his songs reflected vast ambition enmeshed in the belief that pop could be a conduit to the sublime. Beyond the recording studio where his mastery shone, Wilson struggled: He was abused by his father as a child, and mental health struggles, including audio hallucinations (later diagnosed as schizoaffective disorder), led him into isolation at the height of The Beach Boys' success. His greatest musical works made room for the deep melancholy he experienced while evoking an almost otherworldly beauty, the sunset smear of a soul longing for peace. This elevated quality infuses even the playfully slight songs of the early Beach Boys. As one of the first major rock bands of the 1960s, The Beach Boys made hit fodder of subjects like drag racing, high school rivalries and, of course, surfing to express the empowerment, freedom and fun many white middle-class kids felt as the post-war boom empowered their generation. Southern California became the mythologized center of the new American dream, and Brian Wilson's music was its soundtrack. ![]() This song has actually been running through my head today. If I had to pick a Beach Boys song to listen to, this would be it.

Yeah... deep respect for his songwriting, musicianship, and production skills. But... none of the original Beach Boys versions resonated with me in the slightest. I found their sound just too... "twee"? If that makes sense? Anyway, RIP and thoughts to the fans and family.
All that said.. there are many bands that covered his stuff that I really enjoyed. Example: (And appropriate.)

Yes, well ... anyway. Speaking of great guitar riffs, a couple of songs come to mind this morning. I listened to this one on my way to work. It's always been one of my favorite riff based tunes. Sadly, the singer, Josh Clayton-Felt, was diagnosed with testicular cancer and died a month later in 2000 at the too young age of 32. And the second one is one of the best Tex-Mex styler rock bands around, The Refreshments. Everyone knows them for the theme to "King of the Hill" and probably this song. This live performance of "Banditos" is one of my favorite music videos ever. If you've never watched this performance, this is what a rock band should be. We lost something musically when the '90s died. |

I loved that record. Saw them open up for Crowded House in maybe 1991. Heck of a show. Refreshments are solid. Kinda like a little brother of early Soul Asylum. (Huge fan of their first few records.)

I guess I should throw some music into the thread, too.
I'm pretty sure I saw the lead singer for this band in something more recently, which would explain why this one popped back into my feed after a few years' hiatus. |

"Come On Eileen", a #1 hit in April 1983, is a well-known song in the US, but it seems that few people here know that Dexy's Midnight Runners had already had a huge hit in the UK with "Geno", three years earlier.
That song was a tribute to Geno Washington, an American R&B singer who was massive in the UK in the 60's. I finally checked him out today… If you like 60's soul and R&B, you'll love this… Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band (YouTube playlist) And here's the classic Geno, by Dexy's:
