Paying even $500 more for a running scooter is way cheaper. After your first order of parts you would realize how true this is.
I would agree with this statement... there's sort of a sweet spot, where you end up with a $2000 bike, that's FAR cheaper in the end than a $1200 bike that you had to put another $1200 into ....often times for repop parts that are inferior to the ones the more expensive but more original bike had on it.

yes and no is correct.

Yes - It's rediculous to think it should happen right away. Slow down be patient. Deals always come around you just need to wait for it.

No - Your price range is low, but they do come available. It is not unreasonable to think you can get something.

What I think is kinda funny is how impatient you seem to get one vs when you expect to actually ride it. It would drive me crazy having a project and nothing to ride.

Deals are not found, they find you.
It takes years of patience.
I've traded a 12pack for a P200 before.

Make sure everyone knows you're looking for a scooter, because I know your aunt's friend's brother's dogsitter has one they just want hauled away, you just have to wait for the info to trickle down the line.

And a reliable $2000 bike is WAY cheaper then a $800 one that doesn't run.

I also think that most people here are thinking in USD not Australian $$$. $1000usd can usually get a decent P-series project.

I didn't think I was being that impatient to get one. The question was more about whether or not I was being ridiculous thinking I could actually find one for $1000 or less, and also by thinking the folks over at scootlanta were picking on me, but I think we got that straightened out.

+1. I feel the same, and that's why I enjoy hanging out here. Thanks to everyone that's come before me for building such an awesome online community. MV is an invaluable resource for me, and I really feel like I'm making friends here. Even with me starting a whiny thread like this, folks are understanding and genuinely cool. 8)

cutdown o' death...good one...I will officially call it that once it's built.

I've seen it and I've spoke to the guy. There is a 86 P200 up in the Bay Area for 1k that is a clean, complete and running scoot. I almost have enough to grab that scoot in the next couple of weeks..we will see. I'm not worried too much about trying to find a P scoot..they are EVERYWHERE...but thanks though..good lookn' out!

I've been told things like asking about a cheap project bike here "[is] kind of like asking a bunch of really hungry people to let you know if they find some free food so you can get it" (to which someone else replied "awesome") or the chick today that told me to "Please take pictures of the unicorn that will come along with the clunker you get".
I can understand where some of them are coming from. I see people come on our message board asking the same thing. I can say for certain, that if I see a $900 P200 project come up, the first person that I let know its available is not going to be someone I dont know personally. Sorry, its nothing personal, just the fact that people want to make sure that their freinds know of these first, thats human nature.

I still believe the best way to get a good solid project bike for cheap is through a local club, BUT you have to get to know the people in the scene first, otherwise they look at you as an outsider. This isnt a vintage scooter club thing either, this goes for car clubs, or people who trade old arcade game systems.

As far as freindly-ness of the people on the board...that all depends on what makes up that club. For alot of the clubs, just because you have a scooter does not make you 'one of them'...it takes time to get to know everyone...again, just human nature...
