We've started a group game night with pals - and it has landed on my month. We had a lot of fun playing Partini last month!

So I am looking for some suggestions.

-8 to 12 people show up for these game nights.
-The group is varied in interests and education - so nothing too trivia related.
-We've already played poker, Cranium, beer pong world championship and some other drinking-type games.
-I know someone is going to suggest nekkid Twister - so I covered that base already.

So, let's here 'em!! What do you have fun playing in a group?

Everytime I see your avatar, I need a beer.

Group games hmmmm. Got nothing. Good luck with the 'clever' responses.

99!
I showed a bunch of us student teachers this game in Guatemala a few years ago and there was much Gallo beer consumed over hours of 99 games that trip. Here's ow to play:

* Using playing cards. One full deck per 2-3 people. Shuffle and re-deal the pickup pile as needed either during play or between rounds.
* Start at 0 and count to 99. The count increases based upon the card you play.
* Cards points are
o K= 99 (makes total 99 no matter the previous count, even if it is 99),
o Q,J= 10
o 10= -10
o 2=reverse direction
o 9=skip
o A=1 or 11
o all others are face value.
* Each player is dealt a hand of three cards. Each turn, they will play one and immediately draw one after they announce their play total.
* Each player must play one card on their turn, add it to the count pile total and then say the new total value.
* When the player plays the card, they must immediately draw a new card from the draw pile. Once the next person plays their card and the previous player has not drawn, too bad: they play with only two (or one) card the rest of the round.
o for example : Current count is 0, First player (discards) plays a King: first player says 99
o second player plays a 10: second player says 89
o third player plays an 7 : third player says 96
o forth player cannot make a play by using a small-value card or one of the special cards above, they are out.
* Each round consists of continued play with the count pile staying at or under 99. The round ends when one player cannot make a play with their card.
*Cheating is encouraged where a player can trick others into accepting their play. Example: a player plays a 6 and calls "pass" when they are stuck with a high count and the next player plays over that cheat, the cheater's play is legal and the game continues. Cheating is NOT encouraged when it comes to disputes over chip totals, pile totals or cheat plays that were accepted by the group, after the next card has been played.

We usually devise some method of a "chip" like a penny or toothpick, bottle cap, etc. and each player starts with a set number like three or five for marathon nights. The last player with a chip remaining wins the game. As players lose their chips throughout the evening, they are out of the game.

I went to a party about 3 years ago that was a lot of fun. There were about 15 of us there. My friend based the game on an old TV show called "The Liar's Club".

You (the host) get 5 to 10 obscure and unusual objects which are hard to identify. For each round, you select a panel of 4 or 5 people and tell only one of them what the object really is and how it is/was used. The rest are told to make up whatever ridiculous story they can come up with about the object.

The guests have to guess which one of the panel is telling the truth about the object. Whoever collects the most points by guessing who isn't lying most often, wins. Get some small prize (like a case of beer or bottle of wine) for the winner. Some people are crappy liars and don't have much of an imagination but some people are just amazing and they will come up with some really believable stories and lie their butts off.

If you rotate the panel each round, everyone has the same number of guesses and the same number of chances to win. Keep a few items back for any tie breakers required.

It sounds dopey ... but it can be really funny if you have friends who are really good liars with a sense of humour and who can keep a straight face when lying.

3 man
Dice drinking game.

One keeps rolling until someone doesnt drink.

The first person to role a 3 is 3 man, until they roll another 3 to get out of it. Lets say you dont roll a 3 to get out of it, and the next person roles a 3, then you take a drink.

role the following:
5 - the person to the right drinks
7 - the person to the left drinks
9 - community toast
11 - pick someone to drink.

Roll three doubles and you make a rule. (i.e. King of thumbs*)

* The king of thumbs quiety places their thumb on the edge of the table, the last person who does so has to drink and is the king of thumbs.

Great drinking game..

Suck and Blow comes to mind.

Position the group in a close circle, everyone sitting in a chair.

Take a playing card, give it to any participant and instruct them to hold the card in front of their lips and suck, holding it in place.

Then, that person turns to the person next to them and presses the card against the other person's lips. Then, without either person touching the card with their hands, transfer the card by blowing at the same time they suck. That person then turns away to the next person and repeats the exercise.

It is a fun game that can make the players giddy and the card messy. After a couple of rounds, you might use a fresh card.

Another good game is Potato Up Your Butt.

The game requires a chair or stool, a potato and a bucket.

Put the potato on the chair. Put the bucket on the floor a distance away.

Players must, one at a time, sit on the potato and trap it in their arse cheeks or thighs or that area in between, slowly stand and transport the potato to the pail, squat down and drop it in. Hands cannot be used. The potato is transported by precise pinching and waddling. Good game.

Human Knot.

Players come together in a huddle. Everyone crosses their arms and grabs the hand of someone else, repeating with the other hand with a different person. The task is to untie the knot without anyone letting go. If done correctly, you will end up with a circle of people, all holding hands, with some facing into the circle and some facing out. This is fun because it requires teamwork, patience and analysis. There will be stepping over and climbing under and various body parts in contact with others.

There are a lot of fun and challenging strategy games from Europe that I've played with groups of various sizes. As much as I hate to recommend a forum to you (look what happened last time), check out http://boardgamegeek.com/. They have a list of games by member ratings with good descriptions.

My faves:
Puerto Rico: considered the king of these types of games, this deals with trading during the Spanish Empire.

El Grande

Settlers of Catan: a good one to get your feet wet with this kind of game

Carcassonne: Less brainy and a bit more straight fun than some of the others. It also has expansion packs to add to it if you get tired of the basic game.

Most of these max out at 5 players. You can do 2 games at once or play teams. Hard to find games with 8 players.

I just totally nerded all over the place, didn't I? Hi, I'm president of the AV Club and also a Mathlete and founder of the Chess Club. Here is my Mensa card. I'm going to go sit on the other side of the cafeteria until a football player comes over to beat me up. Nerd emoticon
