I was in the local bikeshop at the weekend and saw the 'Trek District' for the first time. 8)

I'm into single speeds as I'm only doing urban town/city riding/commuting and their easier to maintain. In the city I don't see the point in having a lot of gears/speeds. Not into the orange rims though a bit too loud.

it's a lovely bike i have to say i'm very tempted as the five-speed hub-shifter on my pashley tube rider is giving me no end of trouble at the moment.

Looks very nice but the price is crazy high for a single speed bike.

That is a sweet ride! I have heard the drive belts are very quiet. i would like to test one to see if it really is better than a chain.

$929.00 for a single speed bike, Ah, No! Now then combine that with a 5 speed auto shift and I'd be all over it.

A properly maintained chain is quiet and 98.6% efficient.

http://www.jhu.edu/news_info/news/home99/aug99/bike.html

Chains have been perfected over the last 100 years of cycling, something cannot be improved more, they just have different trade offs.

The major advantage is that is easier to maintain, but there are reports that it slips under heavy load and you cannot use a derailleur system.

I guess it works for a very casual bike that you can just pick up and go but don't expect much performance from. Kinda like an S50! Clown emoticon

Hub gears are usually pretty reliable - have you asked a bicycle shop to quickly adjust it for you?

Here's a piccy of another single gear belt drive bike that's foldable:

it's been in for service no less than five times in the last six weeks or so - hub shifters are very mysterious to me, and even the shop admits that adjusting these ones requires scientific precision. the problem with mine is that there is no difference between third and fourth gear (the two gears i use most often) and that it doesn't shift reliably between second, third, and fourth. they've adjusted it twice, rebuilt the hub, replaced the shifter, and it's still not right. pashley is now sending them an entire new set of guts for the hub, which should, i hope, solve the problem.
