I'm a Yank, now about your age or older even, did some of the same route nine or 10 years ago when I bought a PX200 via the 'net at a shop in London (UrbanBikes) and traveled as far as Athens and back via western France, Spain, the Mediterranean coast and Italy. (Lot of ferries, too.) Saw some of what you saw in Normandy; not as much, alas. Stayed in hostels rather than B&B's -- just as welcoming if you can stand the dormitories.

I was alone; would have loved to do it with a gang of buddies!

If you guys know of a solid 200 cc two-stroke Vespa available cheap or even reasonable (don't care what it looks like), I'd come over and do a long trip again in an instant.
