But how the hell do you guys fit your pictures into your avatar with only 20 kb to work with? most of my pictures are like 80 or more, i cut a picture down so small you couldnt see what it was and it was still 28 kb!

Probley a very simple answer right infront of me...

It's actually not that easy. First, you need to start with the right photo. I always shoot my photos in "raw" mode, so I am dealing with the best possible quality. Then I crop it to get rid of any and all extraneous stuff while still keeping enough of the photo to make sense. Once cropped, I use Photoshop to resize it and then "save for web devices". When saving the photo, I use the "Quality" toggle to reduce the image quality which in turn reduces the resolution.

As I said, it's not that easy but entirely doable if you have the right photo to start with and the right tools! (Photoshop or some other photo editor).

I use easy thumbnails which is free. Just point at your photo and create a thumbnail. Then upload the thumbnail. Alter the settings to reduce the file size. MS Paint would also allow you to crop an image and save just a part of it.

ah i see, yeah i cropped it, then resized it and saved as a J-PEG. I have paintshop Pro, but used paint to resize it. I would try out the quality changing
but i get to go to the petrol station fill up the vespa then a nice 6 mile drive to tescos for a little shopping

Thank you for the prompt Help

"save for web" is important, it gets rid of all the EXIF data like camera model, exposure info and date/time that is saved with the image.

+1

It's not really hard with the right tool, one which will save a photo without all the fluff.

I just changed my Avitar to show my GTS250 that I just finished customizing. I used MS Paint to crop and then did a Strech and Skew at 60% each time till I got the photo small enough to fit the parameters. If I had realized it had to be so small I would have done a 20% 1st. The pic has to be 20k and only 128x128 pixels. I hit the 20k files size but the pic was still over 300 pixels.
I think it still looks good enough that you can tell there is no shiny chrome to slow me down.!! Razz emoticon

To post pictures I download them off the camera then use paint to do a 35% x35% stretch and skew to get it under the 800 x800 pixel size limit.
