Hello MVUK people! I'm on your side of the pond right now, however I'm a little bit on a tight schedule. I just want to throw this out there. Anybody want to meet for dinner (I mean, supper) on Fri, Oct 23? I'd like to finally meet you guys and enjoy a glass of wine and an evening meal. Is anyone available this coming Friday? Can anyone suggest a nice restaurant where we all can hear each other talk and enjoy each other's company? Let me know. Thanks! JimC has my email.

Bollocks to PM's, let's organise it here! Alex, when is genie back from Toronto?
Rex, a clue as to whereabouts you'll be based would be a great help - we locals can move about to meet you better than you going vast distances (and a few miles can be vast in London, there are no straight lines, the City designers were "tired and emotional") to meet us. |

Rex will be staying in South Tottenham (N15) with his friend Darek, and won't be online Mon, Tue, Weds. So up to us to sort out.
Requirements - somewhere we can hear each other, with decent food and drink (by which I personally mean decent real ale, others will mean decent wine, others decent soft drinks!). Moving from a restaurant to a pub would be fine too. With curry being the National Dish, that would seem a natural, but best to check Darek and Rex would be happy with that. |

i'm annoyed i'd forgotten how complicated it can be to get a drink in canada. with the exception of quebec, alcohol is only available from special government-sanctioned retailers - you can't just run out the corner shop and buy a bottle of wine. the nearest liquor store is about 3 miles from my hotel.
so .... i return to my hotel room after a hard day of conferencing and think to myself that i'd like to enjoy a nice glass of wine in my room before going out to dinner. there is a bar attached to the hotel, who provide all the room service. in i walk to the bar and order a glass of wine. on my way out the door, i am physically stopped by one of the staff, who says i'm not allowed to take it outside. when i point out that i'm only taking it to my room, and not actually going outside, he says that too is prohibited by licensing laws. i have to drink the glass of wine in the bar, which is loud, characterless, and a bit skanky. no thanks. not the sort of atmosphere i'm after right now. if i want wine in my room, i have to order it from room service and they have to bring it up to me. okay, i say, you can just bring the glass of wine up to my room then, right? nope. if i order it from room service they're only allowed to sell it by the bottle. and they don't sell mini-bottles. sooo..... if i want a glass of wine in my room, i have to order an entire bottle, at a minimum cost of $40, with a 15% gratuity and a room service charge on top they were nice enough to refund me the cost of my glass of wine but i watched sadly as they poured it down the sink |

Suggest to someone (discreetly) that these conferences for imaginative and creative souls are better held somewhere more convivial. |

Awesome! Probably best to choose a restaurant that serves a variety of dishes that would appeal to everyone since there will be several of us. And we're ok for Indian food if that's what everyone likes. I have an Oyster card so I can also travel pretty much anywhere. Darek and I can travel by car if necessary.

May I suggest The Maid of Muswell Hill - easy to get to for those on the edge of the North Circ and most others, not far from Tottenham, good food at sensible prices, and decent beer and wine. Never been there, but reviews seem good.
http://themaidofmuswell.co.uk/ I may poke my nose in there tomorrow, as I'm going to be passing close by. Perhaps Darek knows it? Marc, some of those menu prices on your lovely selections are pretty damn outrageous. |

This indian restaurant, is kinda mine and Genies usual when meeting people. Good food, and prices aren't too steep.
http://www.shampan.co.uk/index.html Good transport links etc. Some nice bars around the area. I can recommend the Princess Alice on Commercial St, has a local pub feel in what is a trendy area. Not sure what's like on a friday night though, but I like it. A wee bit of a trek from shampan, but walking off a good meal to make space for alcohol might be a good idea. Just remembered there's the Foundry which Caligirl (i think that's her name) gave Wonder her royal bastard knighthood, although it may not be to everyones taste. It does have a 'natural' feel to it though. In terms of times for meeting up. Is 7pm a good time for food first? |

19:00 is good for me.
I was trying to find somewhere that wouldn't mean over an hour's journey for most potential attendees... |
