We're in and its a brilliant place - just any free time yesterday grinning from ear to ear. It's so erm, lovely.

It was a punt because I hadn't even seen the house before I picked up the keys but the man done good. It's just perfect. Even the movers thought it was nice!

I got to ride the SH from Hammersmith to Dulwich during the rush hour and rather than riding in my customary manner of "my arse is on fire" I rode it very, very, very carefully as it were made of glass. Nice scooter but I was completely bricking it and a biker asked me at the lights why I wasn't filtering (for the first three miles I just rode in the prescribed I am taking my test manner).

I told him that it was basically brand new after an accident claim, and it belonged to my husband. He laughed.

Whee, congrats!

Nobody ever asks me why I'm not filtering, they just barge past...

Yesterday another scooterist stood on my foot when coming to a stop beside me at traffic lights. I did a long, slow look down and then a long, slow look at him, and he was hugely apologetic

it must feel fantastic to finally be in a place that delights you - the only things i've ever heard you say about your old flat relate to the mold growing in various locations, and the madness going on in the street outside.

i bottled and didn't ride in this morning. it was wet and foggy and frosty, and i'd had a hair-raising ride home last night, and i'm not feeling 100%... and for the first time in my life i got 'a feeling' so i took the Damn Bus instead, knowing i'd regret it .... looking at the lovely day it's turned into, i do

THE STUPIDEST SCOOTER RIDER IN LONDON
Perhap genie, you were right to avoid the roads.

Lorry, I pulled up behind. There a small turning to the left of this lorry. Even if you tried to undertake you would have been on the pavement, not the road.

I saw another scooter rider attempting to get to the turn by undertaking, then when the gap wasn't big enough, dragging the front end over a very high curb.

This resulted in the back wheel slipping under the lorry along with the stupid stupid stupid riders foot, trapping him.

He guns the throttle and keeps trying to mount the curb to undertake. This lorry driver didn't have a prayer of seeing him. The lights will go green soon and I see that the lorry driver will potentially move away, running over this total cock.

I make the biggest, loudest fuss and start waving my arms in the drivers mirror, yelling at him to stop, not move as a scooter rider is trapped behind him and undertaking. He takes notice and does not move.

Meanwhile said stupidest fucking scooter rider in the known universe has managed to get his front wheel onto the pavement. Traffic in the other lane is starting to move as the lights have gone green. He revs onto the pavement, snapping off one of the lights of Tamoretti scooter he is riding, pulling himself free, with his MOMO TWAT helmet on his useless scone, then runs along the pavement takes this left turn he wanted.

What a total twat. And lucky to be alive. Lorry driver looks bored and pissed off, and then moves off.

Laughing emoticon I had always thought of this as a Scottish turn of phrase.

What an absolute tit, btw. Hopefully a lesson learnt, although I doubt it.

I assume absolutely no hint of gratitude for the life/lifestyle-saving actions you had taken?

I supposed he may have been terribly embarassed but still, I get massively bothered when people don't acknowledge nice deeds. For me, it's like you get a tiny interaction and you take down a barrier and become two human beings trying to get somewhere. When people ignore each other they start thinking of each other like obstacles - I think that's one of the things that make the roads dangerous.

Oh, I didn't expect that to turn into such a deep analysis! Oops! Laughing emoticon

OMG, me too! That kind of thing is my nightmare and why I often chicken out of gaps that would actually accommodate me with room to spare. Kate = Hero of the Day!

Genie, I get A Feeling pretty much every time I ride, so I ignore it. It wasn't too misty for me riding in, but the cold/damp combo meant the ET4 kicked up a bit of a fuss about starting.

Then I stopped at Lidl and bought tasty tasty German Christmas treats

Yeah, don't we all see dumb stuff done every day by other riders? Normally I think "its your life to waste".

It was only when he trapped himself that I realised that this was beyond the normal stupid behaviour, and it would certainly get him killed unless I did something. I still don't quite know how he did it.

"Run over by a Lorry on my way to work"

On my way to the office today when this thick bloke in a lorry decides to cut me off. Actually pinned my arse against a curb! I almost spilled my latte! All the while this kitten on a Vespa is screaming at the driver to go. She's actually raising arms and motioning the guy to flatten me like a pancake. I think she was just jealous of my scoot. Unbelievable! Razz emoticon

Heh.

I got nothing in return for my efforts except a lot of honking of horns by those who were held up because the lorry stopped. One day he will cut me up or ride in my blindspot as a reward.

People who dance around lorries on bicycles or scooters don't want to live, and I don't really think its fair to say it is the drivers fault. Not only is it really difficult to have a good view if you are a lorry driver, but you've got not great brakes and a lot of weight to deal with. Lorry drivers are generally very good but they can't turn it round on a sixpence.

I sold my LX 125 on Friday and am now trying to decide what to replace it with. The LX, for some reason just didn't do it for me. I've had 3 ETs and loved all of them; and thought that it'd be the same, but better. In the end though I hardly rode it, choosing my bicycle instead most days. After a year I'd put less than a thousand miles on it. I've been thinking alot about getting the 300, but every time I try it for size, it seems really lardy to me (no offence intended to larger Vespa owners); plus I'm only 5' 6'' (168cm), so tip-toes would be needed to hold it up at junctions. Then there's the Aprilia Sportcity. It looks great but feels a bit plasticky: or maybe all scooters do, after a metal bodied Vespa. Nobody yet has next years models in and I'd only want the flat-black. So, in summing up, I think I'll be scooterless into the new year. Luckily I love cycling!

How about a GT, either 125 or 200 flavours? I got a GT125 in 2003 after two ET4s, and it was a different animal - faster, more stable, less of a skin-of-the-teeth ride, and I had no trouble mounting, riding or parking it (I'm 5'2").

Now I'm back with an ET4, but seeking a GT200

What a beautiful pic, Kam. I just took a landscape myself staring into the abyss from my bedroom window. You can normally see the whole city but the fog decended on us in the middle of last week and has just got thicker. Unfortunately I haven't yet worked out how to resize it on my new toy (Nokia N900). Maybe it'll appear some point over the next few days.

teaboy - i had two et4s and was very very underwhelmed by the lx. i agree with alice - a gt200 might be just the ticket. unless you're extremely inseam-challenged, you should be fine on it. i'm 5' 7" and i can flat-foot it with my boots on.

just spent a lovely day in amsterdam walking, pointing, looking, and drinking coffee. my some minor miracle i managed to avoid walking into a coffee shop all day (okay, it wasn't a miracle it was bill dragging me out the door by the collar). still it's the first visit to amsterdam when i haven't almost died stepping out in front of a tram in a haze.

It was the expressions on the faces of the people in the coffee shops that put me off and even at 10am there were people getting mashed.
All three of the museums that we could have visited have been closed for the winter so we are off to look for Vespa shops in the morning.

The people here are really good looking so we fit right in.

We spent today running the gauntlet from cafe to cafe in an attempt to keep warm because it's freezing here but we did manage to buy some delicious chocolate from a very terse chocolate vendor and then found a Vespa "boutique"which had some fantastic seat covers in snake skin.
A snip at 395 euros - fitted.
I was bummed out because the Helmet Shop that I'd been banging on about for weeks and makes custom open face lids in leather was shut so that was another 350 euros saved but boy are they amazing to look at.
We attempted spending some time in the markets but it just got way too cold to enjoy it so we called it a day and return to my mates flat to warm up.
Many of the locals ride their Vespa's (the 50cc ones) without a crash helmets or even gloves even when it's just above freezing.
Watching them ride by with flushed cheeks made me feel even colder.
This evening we are going out with my mate and his new Russian girlfriend which should prove entertaining.
Coming home tomorow morning. Arse.

Be good

Yes,Scooters of 50cc share the bike lanes which is a bit odd and the Taxis share the Tram lanes which is also weird.

TBH, Doug, I should probably have got myself a contract like that and stuck with my well-loved N95 8GB but the Mrs was due a step up, wanted to stick with PAYG, and wanted the N95 so when my contract expired I was all set on an N97.
All the sales folk I spoke to didn't want to sell me it and O2 weren't doing it so I shopped around a bit and saw the N900 was getting released for direct sales with Nokia just as my contract was expiring.

Found that some mob called Nokia Retail (apparently part of Mobile Phones Direct) were doing it "free" (read "inclusive") on some contracts and got my order in with them in advance of release. So either them, or the Nokia Flagship Stores in London and Heathrow are doing it now. Cheaper than many of the alternatives actually.

Signed up for a two year contract and almost as soon as it arrived found out I could be facing the chop at work! Oops! Never mind: it's a wonderful device.

Anyone looking for an experienced IT Support Engineer? Includes customer service skills second to none.

How do you find the N97 Doug?

Bill and his ego, which is an entire separate entity

Office Christmas party last night at notorious Skok haunt the Dog & Duck. I didn't make it to work today as I couldn't walk. Officially I think I'm working from home as I instructed my colleagues to send me any work that needed doing, but thankfully nothing has appeared.

Commisserations on the head... what is a jam doughnut?

We had our office bash too - but it was tea and cakes in the House of Commons, resisted the temptation to slip my cup and saucer into my pocket.

Then we all went to the pub and drank too much. You cannot live on tea and crustless sandwiches alone.

I'd love to know how you swung getting into the Commons, WM.

My mum's 60 next year and has said that she would love to visit as her b'day present. (I have been on the website, and know that you can ask your MP to get you on a tour. I'm badgering Mum to get herself on the electoral roll - they only came back to the UK a few weeks ago - and then I'll start stalking her MP, whoever that is. But if there's other ways to do it, I'd love to hear).

BB, there are a few ways to get into Parliament short of being elected or being a government beetle.

One option is getting a tour from your MP.

The second is the Summer Opening during the summer break when Parliament is not sitting.

http://www.parliament.uk/visiting/visitingandtours/summeropening.cfm

You can also go for a day debate such as PMQs but no tour is included:

http://www.parliament.uk/visiting/attend/debates.cfm

Since Fatheads for Justice threw pink flour at Bliar from the gallery the security is impressively tight at the Commons. This means every member of the public who goes in has to be security cleared first and you have to be escorted everywhere.

I am a free range government beetle and go wherever they send me. Including tea rooms.

Because I am. I'm all kinds of everything.

Cartoonist, Litigator, Finance Solicitor, Shit Shoveller, Arse Wiper, Writer, Pornograher's Admin Assistant, Security Guard, Honorary Colonel, Bottle Washer, Gardener, Decorator, Historian, and Light Manufacturer are a few of my CV points.

Plus I work for a special needs group called my family.

How do you find the N97 Doug?
Much better than my LG Arena. Everything works... and it had to have a keyboard as my fat fingers can't operated those annoying virtual ones. I like the N900 but it is probably a bit bulky.

Kate you crack me up!
