I am roughing out plans to see my son Perform in an air show in Lancaster PA the weekend of August 22-23. My goal is to ride up the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline drive to get there. Possibly a more westen route on the west side of the Appalachian mountains on the way back. (Some comments here on great rides in West Virginia.) I'll probably ride up Wednesday to Friday prior (Aug 19-21) and back Monday to Wednesday (Aug 24 to 26) after. Will carry camping gear for use most nights.

I have looked at coastal route back but expect mountains to be a bit cooler in August. My wife will probably fly up. Lancaster is where she went to nursing school and she always likes to get there when she can.

Any suggestions on ride and route are welcome. I am familiar with Blue Ridge and Skyline drive route but not alternates for return trip. If anyone wants to hook up for some of the ride it would be great.

Just stay on the Blue Ridge as long as you can! I'm not a big fan of Skyline Drive. It's really boring. Blue Ridge Parkway is nice and twisted, with just the right amount of curves. Love that road!

Anyway, I know the area pretty well (I live around Lancaster). Take 81 all the way to Pa. Rte. 322. Then take that to 222 Which will take you into Lancaster. IMHO 322 is skirts around the edges of Lancaster and you end up overshooting the city by a little bit, but buy is the ride worth it. This way, you can ride through Hershey (home of the chocolate), on through Lebanon and into some nice wooded areas. Not sure which airport you're going to, but I hope this helps.

Also, a more direct route would be to take 81 to Rte. 30. This isn't much fun though.
