Hello everyone

I am in the process of trying to change my Belt and rollers and am having problems removing the Cluthc Side of the Transmission. I was able to change the rollers side out but I cannot remove the clutch off the spindle to remove the old belt. Should this slide off easily? There is a slight bit of play but it does not come off. I have been following Salty Dodd's link below. The wife is starting to laugh at the monkey. Good times. Wha? emoticon Thanks in advance

The whole driven (clutch) side should just slide out. Once the nut on the outside of the bearing is removed, there is nothing to holding it in.

Hate to say it, but wiggle it some.

Okay,

I have been trying to get the Clutch Bell off for the past two nights. There is play in the axle. Is this normal? Also the axle and the cluch bell move together. Is this normal. Is the clutch bell seized on the axle? Everything inside is clean. The Side with the the rollers came off easy. My grumpy pants are on tight! Any suggestions? Going to grab a Stone Ruination and take a break. Thanks everyone.

Here is a picture of the clutch bell. I marked in red where it will not spin from the axle. Thanks.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you.

The fact is, the clutch bell is not attached to anything, only splined onto the axle. In fact, most of the time you have to catch the bell as you pull the transmission cover off as it likes to fall right out.

You should be able to remove the whole assembly together just by pulling.

Is your bike new(ish)? Has anybody been in there before?

The bike is a 2007. It has a little over 11,000 miles. I am the original owner. I had the rollers changed at 6,500 miles but the dealer did not change the belt at the time. I have always had it serviced at the shop prior. After seeing Salty Dodd's and mike moores detailed post about the belt and roller change I thought this would be a good time to try and do it myself so I would know how to do it beofore going on a long trip. Thanks for the advice. Looks like I might have to haul down to Motosport.

Clutch Bell is finally removed. Gave it a bunch wacks with the old rubber mallet for about 5 minutes. That sucker was seized on tight. Should be good to go now. Get the belt changed tomorrow after a nice night in LA with some old friends. Thanks everyone.

Well done. Make sure those splines are well-cleaned before reassembly.

indeed, well cleaned splines will help not only with reassembly but future disassembly. a *small* dab of disc-brake grease or moly on the bell or axle splines is a good idea.

if you *must* hit the axle to remove the bell, a rubber or plastic mallet is the best. just be be sure to block the clutch ass'y against the case so that you don't mess up the drive side gears or bearings.

best,

My GTS had a similar problem a bit below 10K miles. It started with a leaking hub seal which made hub oil leak into the tranny case. The dealer who serviced it for the leak had a similar problem as you: the clutch bell would not come off. They forced it off somehow and had to replace it, the spline area was marred once they had it off. No idea what caused it.

Since then, I never had a problem with it anymore, and it had been off quite a few times.
