Re: Air filter oil
luthorhuss wrote: WOW!! THIS(the pics below) is why you should DYI YOUR AIR FILTERS when you get a chance and at regular intervals...Given my bike now has 10500 miles on it, but I've had it in for 3 services. It's hard to believe that this is just from the last service(which was at 9K) and maybe even hard to believe it's from the 6K service...There was like a good 1/8-1/4" of grime and muck on my filter and check out the pics of the inside of the compartment! It looked like the underside of a lawnmower . Glad I changed it. I did use the K&N, and to compensate for the surface coverage of the aerosol, I simply 'massaged' the oil into the filter and even kinda did an 'accordion' thing with the flats of my whole hand to work the filter back and forth and let the oil get in(didn't get rough with it, just nice slow even presses). Letting it dry now. Stalled out once on my way home today but not on the way this morning to work. I figure either the ECU is still re-learning some things now that the air-filter is clean or its the obscenely high temperatures coupled with the *perhaps* too hot of a temperature rating for the spark plug I'm running in the bike. I'm running an NGK CR7EIX. Still ironing it out. ![]() chris |

Oh for goodness sake just use the specified plugs. No-one using them has complained. Why am I not surprised! <sheesh>

Jim, I've used this make and model of spark plug for the past 9,300 miles and if it is a problem, it hasn't been until now. relax, its all good. |

Great posts guys! This'll help me loads when I go to give my filter a nice scrubbing. Last time, I just peeled the gunk off the top, and put it back in. Probably not what I should have done, but I was a bit pressed for time.

I have an old race fork oil 5WT that didn't suit any bikes I've had recently.
The light watery viscosity made it perfect for the air filters. It's not something to buy by choice, synthetic fork oil is a lot more expensive than air filter oil. I had a K&N oil/cleaner kit before that that lasted from car to bikes. Plain engine oil before that. Plastic grocer fruit/vegie bags seem to be around my place more than large freezer bags, so never short of a containment system to do the work in |

HELP!
I was reading this thread when I woke up at 4:30, and thought it might be a good to check my filter. I undid all of the screws, and about 1/4 cup of oil drained out of the case. What might be the cause of that? I have dropped it a few times, so keep that in mind. I am going to research this while JimC and his team of super brains reviews and comments on the issue. |

If you drop to the left while the engine is running - oil will get into the air filter big time. No worries, clean when you have time.

I tried the K&N oil filter spray kit, but it seemed to thick! Kept sucking oil out of the crankcase. Finally did like Jim suggested, 50/50 engine oil and petrol. It is a lot thinner mixture, and no more oil collection in the air filter or drain tubes. Well about one inch in 2000 miles on the front clear tubing drain. At least I found someone with a car filter, that had use of the K&N kit.

For those who think engine oil is too thin (and in some ways it is, granted) try chain-saw oil instead, mixed 50:50 with petrol to get it well incorporated.
