Hi,

i was in a rush, just this scoot from my boss, and just had the shop do an oil change when they were taking care of something else on it; the scoot had been idle for years.

I have a 2006 GT200L and the manual says use 5w40 synthetic. Shop used 10w40, non-synthetic.

Is this a big deal?

Should I just change back to synthetic myself? If so, I read (in the manuals) that not all the oil comes out when you release drain plug. Of the 1.16 quart capacity, after emptying you should expect to add ~ 0.64 quarts, implying ~0.5 quarts remain in the case.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Me, I'd get the shop to re-do it at their expense, if they proved amenable. Otherwise DIY, and don't use that shop again. Loads of 'shops' use a cheap 10-30 mineral oil as 'it works' - they say. They are not interested in you doing 80,000 miles or more down the line. They just want their cash, now. Tits.

It should have Full Synthetic, 5w40. It is the best protection and recommended by the factory.

This kind of thing is why I prefer to do it all (or nearly all) myself.

Yah, I'll call them when they open on tuesday.

In a DIY job, would you be able to suggest I get that extra 1/2 quart of oil that remains in the engine?

many thanks.

The oil type and amount needed are stamped into the engine cast right next to the oil filler on my GT. It states "1000cc 5W-30," although I am running 5W-40 in mine right now. I would have them re-do the right oil - 5W-30 and full synthetic - as jimc stated, at their expense.

BTW- there is no half quart remaining in the engine on a GT. Maybe a few tablespoons, but not a half quart. The oil capacity is only one quart, actually a liter.

Here's what I'd do but only cause I'm super anal...

1. Drain old oil and filter
2. Replace filter and 1qt of good oil.
3. Let run for a few minutes, ride it around the block or something. I
4. Drain good (mixed with the little bad that was left) oil
5. Replace with 1 qt good oil.

That was you're getting the most possible ounce of that shity oil out of there.

Hmm... I'd just drain the oil as normal and drain the filter, re-use the filter and re-fill with the right oil. The tiny amount of the old stuff left won't hurt IMHO.

I haven't changed my own oil yet; scoot has only been in my posession since last week. But when you change the oil, you get close to one quart extracted?

Seems odd, cuz the manual said that once all the old oil has been removed, add ~600-650cc, indicating ~0.5 quart "remains in the circuit" if full capacity in the circuit is 1.16.

Many thanks for all the replies.

+1. Of course!
A tiny amount of 10-wt left in with newly replaced 5-wt is absolutely meaningless!
But I think I would definitely replace most of the non-synthetic with the fully synthetic if it were my scoot, and I ain't particularly anal about oil types either....

Well, I drained 950cc from the case yesterday while doing my oil change, after putting in a full liter on the last change a few months ago. I bought a set of cheapo metric measuring cups from Walmart the other day, which I used to drain and measure old and new oil when doing the oil change.

Also, I used Shell Rotella-T full synthetic sold at Walmart for $19 for a 1-gallon jug this time (versus $10 a quart for other synthetics). I will be keeping tabs on how well I like it, since the price is really good. Other motorcycle forums have had discussions on Rotella, and it seems to be well-liked so far.

It's a funny thing, huh? Totally marketed toward farm equipment, diesel haulers and heavy machinery, but the specs match up really well for motorcycle applications too.
