I have always wondered who Johny Cash was singing about when he told the story of the little dark haired boy that played the Tennessee flattop box was. Maybe his name was Al.

Re: [NSR] Why would Paul Simon want to be called Al?
scootermarc69 wrote: Just wondering. Lyrics from Jolson's hit "Buddy can you spare a dime" at about the same time : "Say, don't you remember? They called me Al. It was Al all the time. Say, don't you remember? I'm your pal. Brother, can you spare a dime?" Take a look at how he was promoted at that time. |

Our youngest son is named, Alex and he was around five or six years old when this song was popular so I would play it on our piano and my wife, son and I would sing the words. We had a ball with that song and the boy loved the attention of having a song with his name in it.

That song was popular when my wife and I were newly married. We called each other Al and Betty, we thought we were cute... Occasionally she still calls me Al and I call her Betty.
I grew up with the Tom Jones version of "Buddy can you Spare a Dime". |

Apparently some guy at a party kept calling Paul and his wife Peggy 'Al' and 'Betty' by mistake...and a great song was born!

"Betty Beauty is the name of a hair coloring made especially for pubic hair. Apparently many hair salons have made the practice of providing women with a brown bag of hair coloring to match the coloring they just got put on their heads. A woman named Nancy Jarecki decided why not sell a product like this over-the-counter. And so, Betty Beauty was born." They sell this just up the road from my work. About two shops down from the shop which (honestly) is called "Herbal Wang" |
