The time has come.
I'm especially miffed now since I've just spent a bit of time typing a load out only to lose it all by testing the link. Headache emoticon

So now for the short version: I'm changing my rear tyre. I'm going to take the wheel to a garage to get the tyre and get them to put it on the rim. My exhaust is rather rusty so I'll give this a rub down and repaint while it's off.
(Struggling to think now why I didn't keep it so concise the first time - obviously not my style.)

I came across this step by step guide for the process and thought it might come in handy for others on here - apologies if this has been posted before but I've done a search and don't recall seeing it.

Anyway, I also wanted to check what kind of lubricant this "wheel grease" the chap mentions is. Is this a generic type of grease? Does it keep well or does it have a shelf life? Aside from the tools and the "cotter" pin (which I assume I can pick up from Sutton's) can anyone advise of any other essentials to have on hand when tackling the wheel?

Opinions will be appreciated (within reason ).

Just use normal high temp grease for bearings etc that most people have in there workshop .

While the wheel is off I normaly change the gear oil as it's then a 10 minute job

Plus copper grease all bolts as you put them back .

He called it 'axle grease' it's a bit of a generic term. Here's the burb on Shell's axle grease (Rotella HD grease) "general lubrication of wheel bearings, axles, ball joints, universal joints, power take-offs, king pins, bushings, and disc brakes."

You may think of using anti-seize on the exhaust nuts:
"COPPER ANTI-SEIZE LUBRICANT

Exclusive formula suspends copper and graphite in a high quality grease. Protects metal parts from rust, corrosion, galling, and seizing at temperatures to 1800°F (982°C)."

It will help next time you have to do a tire change.

I noticed that he seems to be using a torque wrench to undo his axle nut. I bought a 2 foot 1/2" drive breaker bar for that kind of thing (or over tightened oil plugs, & car lug nuts).

Harvey
