I reported on another thread that after a long ride (app 170 miles) my GT was being unresponsive to the throttle and loosing power intermittently. It also got unusually loud when I opened her up a bit, similar, but not the same as the exhaust issue with the GTs. When turned off I also heard a 'scraping' when the tire turned, either rolling the scoot or just rotating the rear tire. That was Saturday. I just had time today to look at it this evening.

First, I discovered that the scraping was that the rear mudguard was resting on the rear tire. It is totally loose, it appears that the end of the mudguard was burnt off by rubbing on the tire for so many miles. As I was trying to pull it up to see what it wasn't attached to I noticed that the union pipe to the carb was off. Aha! I said, that could be the performance problem. So I loosened the clamp, reattached it and tightened the clamp again. While I was doing that I noticed that the air cleaner assembly (to which the other end of the union pipe is attached) was entirely loose...

Hmm, says Larry! So I went to the side of the scoot and took off the lower guard on the side and noticed that there were NO SCREWS holding in the Air cleaner box!!!! NONE, ZIPPO! There are supposed to be 7 of the buggers in there! There was also nothing going into the "bush" (per the parts manual) in the front of the air cleaner box!

I had the tire changed and a 16,000 mile check up done on it about 1200 miles before this ride. It appears I've been riding that long with nothing holding my air box or rear fender on! I find it very hard to believe that ALL these fasteners fell off on their own. I will need to call my service place tomorrow and have a talk. I don't know entirely how the rear mud guard attaches on the far side but I know on the air box side it is also held on with those screws. That's a butt load of fasteners missing. I'm gonna need some answers.

There was this post linking the two conditions:

Check those 3 GT 200 Air Box Bolts

Good luck with your service people!

Yep, same thing happened on my 250. Did they clean the air filter or open up the belt case when you had it in for service? If so, it sounds like they didn't tighten things down properly and they owe you a new fender and a set of fasteners. Somebody got some 'splainin to do!

In a pinch, you can go to the hardware store and get a couple of 50mm long M8 bolts to hold the airbox and what's left of the fender in place, so you can still get around. It's a little bit of a pain to line up the airbox and fender on the swingarm so that everything fits together, but not too difficult to figure out. Good luck!

Now I'm nervous. I'm going to have to take look. I had no idea the air filter screws were holding the mudguard on.

IME, the airbox is the "part most likely to be left unattached" by mechanics. Seriously, it's pathetic.

So after reading this, I went to check out my Airbox.....
And what a surprise, it's just hanging there only attached by the clamp to the hose.

I cant believe that I've been riding like this for about a year!!

While this in no way excuses the mechanic who did such sloppy (even dangerously negligent) work on your scooter,
I think perhaps you need to pay A LOT more attention to your scooter and your safety!

Seems to me a simple safety check and once-over done before going out riding would've shown you that the mudguard
was resting AGAINST the rear tire??? -And you said you rode it in this condition for "so many miles"?

Hmmmm... As riders, we owe it to ourselves to regularly check out our scooters for developing unsafe conditions.
It seems to me that perhaps your shop mechanic was not the only person being negligent here..?

I'm not really offended by your post but in my insecure need to defend myself.... Just before this ride I did check my oil levels, tire pressure and coolant levels since I knew I was going on a longer ride. I also took the screwdriver out and tighted my crash bars etc since they'd come lose on me in the past, so I was down, putzing in the area. At that time there was no scraping, aparently the union hose was still holding the airbox in place which must have been holding the mud guard up off of the tire. Had I heard scraping I wouldn't have ridden. The "so many miles" comment was that I first noticed something wrong with the scoot when I was 80 miles from home and had to ride it back.

My dealer has always done well by me in the past which is why I've not mentioned any names. I called yesterday and though the owner was suspicious since I got so many miles on it since the service he did agree to supply me with a few of the essential fasteners so that I could go home and at least get into riding condition so I could bring it in. Folks, it is truly a pain when your only service place is 15 miles away and in a heavily urban environment that's not easy to access.

ROTFL

Ok, I have to get off this forum and get to work. Too much comedy here.
