Well, not really but.. My 500 is starting to sound VERY loud. Almost like the muffler is coming apart or something. I made an appointment for my 6000 mile service for next monday (it's got 6550 on it) but the way it sounds has got me very nervous about the 40 minute trip to the shop. It's sputtering and making all kinds of strange noises - pretty much all of a sudden however I did start to notice a more defined "putt putt putt" sound a couple of weeks ago. It's just gotten so damn loud though!

I just did the air filter cleaning thing the day before yesterday (you may have been following the thread I started called "air filter oil").
Hope I didn't mess something up.

What would make the scoot so damn loud all of a sudden? I also looked at the exhaust system closely and it all seems to be OK. At least visually...

OK, really is the header pipe from the engine and the muffler pipe missing any thing between them?

Exactly, there is a graphite gasket that fits between the header pipe and the muffler. There is a clamp at the joint and it does have to be tight. Once the gasket has been compromised though it's probably too late. This was a common problem on the GT 200 and GTS 250. Search for 'Muffler Bearing' and you'll come up with all kinds of threads. Although this hasn't been seen much lately, a gasket failure is the most plausible cause.

I have yet to confirm what the problem is.

I'll look at it more closely in the morning and will post back with an update. Thanks...

How many miles do you have on your 500? Sounds to me like you're just going through the same thing a lot of us did. I don't know without hearing it, but a lot of us went through a phase after break in where the exhaust actually got a real nice loud putter sound similar to a Harley at idle to it. It only lasts for around 500-1000 miles though so enjoy that. If it's louder or making a weird noise, then it's not this, but I can tell you that it was very noticeable.

Oops! Hmm...don't remember it going on that long and since it you said it no longer has that "nice" putt putt sound, it sounds like you went through the great exhaust sound phase that many of us wish had stayed. No clue, but keep us updated. There was a post on here awhile back about how the muffler clamp had caused something to fall off/in due to breakage. Never had any problems, but apparently quite a few had....just a thought.

Had a rear tire changed a couple of weeks ago. The graphite gasket was harden and misaligned causing air leakage and it sounds much more louder then it normally does. The gasket cost USD31.50 here. Any price indications please.

Hey Jim!, went through the posts about this problem and about the uber loud sound the bike makes like a Harley or similar. All of them talk about how to fix it and how to carry a spare, but none mention any damage/problems that may occur...you even mentioned riding 200 miles home with it. So...if you were a glutton...could you purposefully remove it and see if you like the loud sound better?

Completely removing it would NOT be wise.

A similar gasket is used on some other bikes - often without the graphite element, i.e., just a wire mesh that is clamped down. (some Kawasakis for one.)

My thoughts are that Piaggio have realised the graphite bit is actually the killer, so have started to supply them 'half-filled' with graphite. With some luck they might realise they can do without it altogether...

We'll see.

Razz emoticon I think someone did mentioned about the air intake which could cost unwanted issues when the muffler is taken out. I posted about the loud exhaust when the muffler was taken out and stated that I quite like the sound but was advised against it. Wha? emoticon

Crying or Very sad emoticon After reading this posting I decided to check out the collar at the muffler, to my surprised the collar have totally disintegrated! Can be broken into pieces with just a slight poke with the screwdriver. I bent 2 pieces of 25mm x 0.8mm flat bar into the size of the tubing and tied it back. 90% of the leakage was gone. Not happy with the 10%, I took out the muffler and cleaned the remaining original collar debris left in the muffler and tied it back. Guess what? I am now having 200% leakage! Gonna continue to tackle the problem tomorrow.

Had the baffle fall out of my LV pipe once. It sounded AMAZING! hehe. But also a bit silly.

People were looking around expecting something enormous and chrome-covered and doing huge double-takes when seeing me.

Might do it again one day just for fun!

I was riding around for about an hour without the graphite gasket and it sounded reaaaaaaaally loud. Enjoyed it though. Went to the shop to have it fixed just before they close for the day. Now I have a quiet exhaust again.

That is why I am real careful with the muffler when doing a rear tire change. But if it were damaged and you had to ride, say you were 200 miles from nowhere, would it hurt anything other than your eardrums?

This is still the question I'm trying to get answered. I've been told that it's ill advised, but I'd really like to get a "here's what would happen if you continued riding without it..." sort of answer. The reason isn't necessarily cos I would remove it, but I'm wondering if you could 'play' with it to get just the right amount of loudness. This could save some folks a few hundred bucks they might spend for a louder pipe or might just be fun to do for a day,say if you know you're going on a poker run with all Harleys .

Ok, so I looked again... Of course I don't see any problem because I really don't know what I'm looking for... Crying or Very sad emoticon

There is a little play from where the pipe connects to the muffler. Almost like it's just sitting in the opening rather than being fitted tight.

So sorry for my complete ignorance - but the collar looking thing between the pipe and the actual chrome muffler. Is that the graphite gasket everyone is talking about? If it is, then it looks like it is in pretty good shape to me.

Thanks in advance for the help here!

Here are some pictures I just took. Does it look normal to you?

Looks like the bushing is gone. There should be no "play".Underneath the clamp between the outer muffler piple and the inner pipe from the header is a bushing that the clamp holds in place and allows the two pieces to move a little. It is a low cost part and easy to replace by pulling the muffler off, inserting the bushing and putting back together.

I agree with Fuzzy. I don't see a trace of the bushing in any photo.

Thanks Fuzzy! So without the bushing in there - would it really make it so tremendously loud like it is now?

Since I'm bringing it in for service next Monday, I'll just let them fix it I guess. I'll most likely break something it if I do it myself...

grrrr...days without riding...

Thanks!

Thanks sticky. I actually was looking at that diagram this morning. Which part is the graphite collar thing? Is it in fact the bushing? IIRC, #11 is the "adaptor" I think.

edit: it says it right on your diagram... lol

Considering the difficulty of getting parts, take JimC's advice and buy two, one to install now and one to carry as a spare. Can be replaced on the road with normal tools. IIRC there's a thread someplace with instructions, pretty simple.

Don't assume your shop has the part in stock ( mine did not), have them order it right now so as not to hold you up. Order two as has been said.
I am coming up on the 6200 service and plan to have new ones installed then. I ordered them long ago though, when I heard they are regular maintenance items.

Here's a pic I found of it on a uk site. I'm sure there's probably closer places that sell the spares, maybe even some retail shops that have them on hand. Here's the link as well:

http://www.piaggiospares.co.uk/sparesPiaggio/partImage.asp?GPN=VS18948

While I was perusing, found two aftermarket exhausts for the 500/X9. Anyone ever heard of/seen/used these?

No, that is the collapsible gasket that goes between the cylinder head and the downpipe.

This is the graphite collar for the 400/500 (part number 874946, cost about GBP13) - this view is of the graphited end that goes first into the silencer (muffler) - the older ones looked identical at both ends as they were graphited all over:

That was what I had changed yesterday at the shop. Now it is purring as new. Before I replaced it, I was on the road for about an hour without the graphite collar and the sound from the exhaust was deafening but fun. Razz emoticon But somehow it wasn't running like it should. Slightly under power and frequent 'backfiring' can be heard. Might be the spark plugs, haven't change it ever since I got the bike. Crying or Very sad emoticon

Item 11 ??
Great... Looks like I just ordered two of the wrong thing from Athens Scooter Company.
I ordered part number 828185.

Where is the "correct" part shown in the parts diagram? (part number 874946) ?? It should be right next to item 11 (the x-9 adapter) shouldn't it?
The lists are different. Athens site lists TWO item 11's

Look here...

That part number has been superseded. However if you get what you ordered it should be just fine, it'll be the older style collar (fully graphited). So no worries.
