Hello, I have a project P that I picked up recently. The piston was stuck from sitting, I got it unstuck with a hammer and wood block. I was wondering if I could reuse the piston and rings after cleaning them up? The cylinder is nice with no gouges. The guy that had it said it was running before he put it up.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I suppose...short answer...is that you could get a set of rings and pop them on there and make it work.
If i had to do it... i wouldn't want to be bothered to crack the top end again if i found out the rings i bought + the old piston weren't creating enough compression for my liking. If you've got more time than money, this is your option.
I would just buy a 1st oversize piston and rings for $75 ... and pull off the jug and take it to a machine shop ( i use the local motorcycle repair place..they can do it )... and they'll overbore your jug for $60 or so...and match it to the piston + rings.
That way you've got a nice fresh top end with tons of compression, and you shouldn't have to worry about having to crack into it again due to low compression.
stuck from seizing is a huge problem. stuck from sitting? probably not a problem. maybe check the compression. maybe even hone the bore and go with new rings. me? i'd just throw it back together and ride it.
