I just took my LX 150 to a new dealer for state (PA) inspection. It has 1800 miles on it. He says I can't pass inspection without a new rear tire ($180). Of course, I am his captive.

Is this reasonable?

I paid about $40 for the tire only(bought online) and $70 to have it installed by the dealer, so $110 total.

Depending on your weight, typical load carrying, and whether or not the tire has been properly inflated, it is entirely possible for the stock tire to last only 1800 miles. Mine was due in the 2500 neighborhood, but I did much more long(er) riding than start & stop, so I think that helped with my mileage.

FWIW, I don't know how it works in PA, but your scooter should NOT be hostage. If he doesn't want to pass it, fine, but he can't force you to buy a tire from him. Furthermore, tires are $40-$60 + installation, not $180.

If you have further problems, call your local dealer and get info on whom to call to file a complaint. In CA, we have the DMV and the BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair). Hope it works out for you.

TYRES
Dealers tend to get the arm in a bit . Tyres are not hard to fit,you can easily do it with tyre levers. On t 500mile round trip to Shannon Ireland i ripped my rear tyre and the only replacement i could get was a 3.50x10 dexter from a PX200!! well it fitted bit of washing up liquid etc ps it was on my scoot until it needed replaced lol

I also live in pittsburgh and my lx 150 tire only lasted about 2000 miles.
I got a michelin pilot city from motorcycle superstore for about $40 and mounted it myself. I mounted mine on an automotive tire machine. Anything 2/32 tread or less fails or if any two wear bars are touching adjacent tread. I am also a PA inspection mechanic (automotive not motorcycle) Take the vespa home, remove the wheel yourself, and carry it in to a shop if you want to save some $. I did not see any weights on my wheel and did not balance it. I have not felt any vibrations so I woud think its safe to say dont worry about balancing a rear tire. It's only 10" in diameter so it is pretty hard to pick up any vibration even at 65 mph.
