So I started noticing an oil smell right at the end of Amerivespa. I had ridden about 1,800 miles in 10 days, so it had done a lot of work before the smell showed up. On a longish ride Sunday I noticed the oil trail you see in these photos. Anyone know what caused this? Anyone know what parts I should have handy before taking this apart to fix or tighten whatever is leaking?

Thanks.

This is a side view with an inset of the area where I believe the oil is leaking from.

This is at the back of the belt housing. Some of the oil appears to have been wind-driven to the back.

It looks like very light oil and I suspect that it is coming from the air-box. Check your air cleaner and see if any excess oil has accumulated in there.

Yes, there has been some oil 'blown off' through the air filter after some high-spirited riding. Very normal, just clean out the air filter if you really want to - I would after every 3000 miles anyway. There are some methods to add 'loops' to the oil breather tube, but IMHO these could possibly cause more problems than the DIY effort justifies.

I get the very same thing on my Fuoco, it is a sign of enjoying the bike.

Jim,

I am fully guilty. I damn near rode the wheels off it when I rode down to Amerivespa.

...and thanks...

Arjen,

I found somthing about oil in this area I didn't know of. There is an oil blow-by and condensate tube running from the air filter. I think it's there to accomodate the crank case emission system in which gases and, I presume some oil passes through a tube to the air filter. I found this out on a PDF file I downloaded. It's a maintenance manual - much better that the original one I got with my 2006 BV500. I'll try to attach it.

Arjen,

My attempt to attach the maintenance manual didn't work. I'll send it as an e-mail attachmtent to you. Look on page 42 for an explanation. I have not emptied this tube yet but I got a little oil on mine just like you did.

Of course you could just download it from here:
http://www.wotmeworry.org.uk/manuals/Beverley/

The manuals are a bit large to attach or email methinks. Don't waste resources...
