Thanks OAD. Mine is on order now too. Now I just have to decide if I want to use it to install Dr Pulley sliders or J-Costa on my 400.

OK, never let it be said that I am afraid to make a fool of myself. What is a variator tool? I assume it is used somewhere in installing the variator, but what exactly does it do?

I bought 1 of those tools at Amervespa from Motorsport Scooters for my 250 and test fitted it today. It worked great. I am thinking of getting 1 for the 400. R.B. |

Got a chance to use it this afternoon to install 15 gm Dr Pulley sliders in my 400. Tool is great and much easier than the Piaggio one I have for my 250.
Quick ride before dinner after install and first impression of Dr Pulley is good. OAD, thanks for sharing the availability of the tool. joe bulva thanks for sharing the value and use of the tool in your threads. |

Buzz Tool and Dr. Pulleys
I do all my MP3 shopping at Scooter Trap. Just ordered the buzz tool and 15gram Dr. Pulleys for my 500. The latter are on backorder, guess the rest of you are doing the same thing. Great outfit.
Matt, when you get the G&G pipe I'll order one. Thanks for supporting the MP3. Al Seidel |

Got one too
I ordered the tool and a belt. The belt was only $109. I changed the belt last weekend and the tool work great. I did have to buy a 21mm offset wrench to remove the clutch nut. I only have about $62 invested in tools. That's less than the labor at any shop. It took me less than an hour to change the belt. Most of that time was disassembling and assembling the plastic panels on my X9. Now that I know the sequence I can do it faster the next time.

Used the tool in anger for the first time today on an X9 500 SL, as my battery impact wrench had no effect whatsoever on the over-torqued variator and clutch nuts. Worked a treat. Did the clutch with a combination of a bit of sturdy wood jammed in the wheel, the rear brake lever zip-tied up and a breaker bar.
Did them up again with the impact wrench - at least I know I'll be able to undo them next time! |

Mine showed up on Wednesday. I promptly put it to good use taking the vari off with my BFW.
Works great. Thanks Joe |

Great & great!
Price-wise, it would seem that if all you want is that tool, go with Scootertrap. If you have a long grocery-list of stuff to buy, then go with Motorsport (free shipping after $100). 8)

May I suggest either Motorsport, or Scootertrap come up with a MP3 (500)-specific tool set that contains one of each of the following:
* Variator tool * Offset wrench (for clutch) * Oil filter wrench (cup-style) * Oil drain plug wrench Have I forgotten anything? Price them just right as a set and throw in a little discount and I am sure we will buy them (instead of one at a time) like hotcakes! Just a though, anyway. 8) |

A personal request/Christmas MP3-tool wishlist
Obviously, if what we want to do is to periodically perform DIY maintenance on our scooters, we are gonna need all the proper tools for the jobs. So why stop at just the variator tool? If we're gonna do it right, why not go all the way and get the whole set at once?! I wasn't born with, and my dad didn't hand me down a set of MP3-tools, either.
I just hope the vendors will finally see it our way and give us some help; instead of us having to slowly build our own personal set of model-specific tools, one piece at a time. C'mon Motorsport or ScooterTrap, these are all the key tools we must have to do the jobs, right?! PS Add to the list: a quality torque wrench and a decent electric impact wrench, too. |

Vendors can only supply what the aftermarket suppliers can get. Standard wrenchs can be had easy. the hard stuff is like the vari tool that just came on the market, prior to that thats how the home made stuff came about with the piece of wood and what ever. |

You said it all right there! We don't manufacture tools... we just carry what aftermarket companies offer. If they make it and it's good quality, we will get it. And as far "vendors seeing it your way"... don't we already do that??

Torque wrench
Talking about torque wrenches. Make sure your torque wrench can torque left hand threaded nuts. Even though you are tightening the clutch nut right handed the torque wrench is on the axle and it is holding it left handed.
