So this is really TWO topics, but I figured I'd put both on, since they are kinda connected...

There's been some interesting discussion about the baffle/gasket and the increase/decrease of sound for the bike by adjusting it.
https://modernvespa.com/forum/topic49581
and
https://modernvespa.com/forum/topic49608

So without any specific issues that were associated with the engine, I decided to experiment...

Two days ago, I took off my baffle/gasket completely to see if the sound was to my liking and to see if it affected performance. Here's my findings/opinions of doing this:

1. The sound is MUCH louder, though not as loud as I assumed it would be. It's very similar to a large block Harley or cruiser of sorts, though I think the main difference is that while the cruiser has the cc's to 'ease out of a red light', I never knew the power the mp3 has to uumph up to move out of a red light at a brisk pace. Thus, unlike the cruiser which may have a regular rev sound leaving a red light, the 500 sounded like I was at a drag strip every time it needed to get it and my fairly large butt moving. Once up to speed or at idle, it was pretty much identical to a cruiser.

2. There is a distinct 'hair dryer on the ankles' breeze coming off the back air of the muffler without the gasket. It was never uncomfortable, but it did make me think that it creates an issue with anyone who might smoke on their bikes (OAD I'm looking at you Razz emoticon), or for that matter anyone who might have to park inside near a wall of a garage or near a nice shiny car.

3. The loss of back pressure from the 'unsealed' joint is noticeable in that your acceleration from 0-... takes a hit. This also leads to the issue with #1 and that I felt like the bike was working harder to get going.

Result: It was cool to hear it do it's thing once off, and it may be a neat little thing to hear once around the parking lot, but then I'd advise quickly reinstalling it once the exhaust is cooled. I got "lucky" and my gasket is almost in perfect condition and I was able to remove/reinstall it in such shape. That said, I've already planned on ordering another to have not only as a back up, but just to install when my next service comes up to cover my bases.

On to the second thing that came up:

So while out riding on the ungasketed pipe, my temp gauge suddenly begin to climb and my fan came on. I was able to ease it to the closest auto parts store. By the time I got there, the temp gauge had gone FULL! and was at full bars, at "H". In case any of you ever wondered what it would read when it gets that hot, well, it reads "0"(zero) flashing over and over. Don't know why, but just an interesting thing that I hope you never have to see. After checking things out, one of my hose clamps musta finally completely failed. To make matters worse, (this is my own 'theory'), I think the heat coming off the ungasketed pipe had something to do with it. Not sure, but just saying that normally, I get a little bit of a leak, but today I guess it finally ran out. It was completely my fault for not checking the fluid, but I was so wrapped up in the muffler sound check that I didn't. Luckily, it was only about 1/8 of a mile to the store where I fixed the clamp, filled up on 50/50 coolant, and everything is "cool" now.

Almost forgot...also did a clamp change on all 3 hose clamps today. Just an FYI, I know it's been said that you can reach the back one without getting the front two off, and you can, BUT MAN IS IT A BUGGER! Good thing I was taking them all off, I can't imagine trying to work a clamp on/off on just the back one. I'll try and get some pics up of the new clamps tonight.

I maybe wrong, but mess with the back pressure on the exhaust and you could burn up your head and valves.

You're prolly right Bohemian. I asked whether or not anyone had any specific knowledge of what might happen before I tried, but didn't really get any hits. I'm glad to have tried it for a few short rides, and hopefully with my 'guinea pig' experiment, no one else will have to. Does anyone know of any specific issues that might arise from removing/modifiying the baffle? I know that many people are trying/testing out aftermarket exhausts and fiddling with them...

Just an FYI, don't be afraid to be "Capt. Anal" about your service...I've had 3 already and in each case, something was missed, be it plugs, fluid, filter, or something. I'm pretty sure my air filter was NEVER cleaned/checked. Take your service booklet, and let them know up front that you will be inspecting everything to make sure it was done/looked at and that you expect to get the list covered. I know this might ruffle some feathers, but really, it's more than annoying to pay good money for a service only to get the general 'must be done' items checked...

Guess you will be alright if you do not go at very high speed all the time to the shop. Before I had the graphite collar changed a few days ago I was like riding( without the graphite collar and with a very loud exhaust) as if I stole it for at least an hour. So far it is okay. I hope I didn't burn up any of the above mentioned. Good luck on the way to the shop.

I printed out a detailed list from the owners manual so there isn't any question as to exactly what should be done. I ran into problems the last time I had the bike serviced. That was at the dealership, which is no more. Not surprising since they didn't seem to know a thing about the mp3's they were selling. They were awful!

This new place I'm taking it to seems pretty good though. We shall see...

I did my best to make it as idiot proof as possible when I took my 400 in for its 6k service check. I actually went so far as to put a spreadsheet together and printed it out, went back into the shop and showed it to one of the guyz working on the bikes and straight out asked: "How long might it take you to complete these various tasks?" Straight away I was given an answer of 2 to 3 hours MAX. GREAT! This included a rear tire change.

I bought all the parts cuz I wanted to spread the part costs out over 6 months instead of shouldering all those costs at one time. I booked the service time out 2 weeks in advance. When I pondered all of the various parts and materials to bring in for the 6k service I decided to leave the oil and filter at home. !!!LOL!!! So I call in 3 hours after dropping the bike off just to see if the service was completed. The guy tells me: "Hellz bellz we installed our last oil filter for the MP3 yesterday. We'll have to order one in." !!!!LOL!!! WTF?

So I drive 20 miles into downtown and drop off ONE of the 2 things I decided to originally not bring in. I picked up my MP3 8 hours after dropping it off, 10 AM to 6 PM. So, for myself the short story is leave as much to chance as you are willing.

Good Luck!

chris

P.S. You can afford to wait on the J-Costa. Max install time is an hour. You *perhaps* cannot afford a blow out on a rear tire that is possibly already on the wear bars.

LOL - I just changed all three of mine too. I also found the sccrews just around the pump inlet/outlets were a tad loose. Will see if the bugger leaks after that...
Also straightened the bards and torqued teh other day. Took it out for a spin and I swear something feels a little weird with the steering - like something isn't quite right. *sigh* Still taking in to shop...
