Marty, you're gonna LOVE the Stebel horn, it will transform your life! Oh well, that might be an exaggeration, but you'll love it and use it more than you need to just because you can. 8)

Just be aware of the angle you install it in. The bell-shaped part of mine is at a slight angle, which unfortunately allows water to get into it through the grille. Makes the horn sound pathetic. The only cure is to go around blasting it until it spits all the water out. Not that doing that isn't fun... 8)

Overall, it's a great horn! I'm glad I have mine. First time I really had to use it out on the road, I bet I made the stupid driver wet his pants.

In the GT - there is not an option to mount it incorrectly at an angle. Shit - there is barely enough room to mount it at all!

(and you are welcome, Boulty! Whatever it takes to keep you alive, my friend.)

O M G !!!!!!!
Now I know what 139 dB sounds like.
The install went great and the Wiki tutorial was right on the money - thanks to all contributors.

I have to say, I have mulled over the Stebel for nearly two years while others have installed and raved about the beasty.

To add to the chorus; you absolutely, must must must get a Stebel Nautilus on your scooter. If not for the safety factor, then for the absolute fun of making some lame-asleep-behind-the-wheel motorist shit their pants!

Congratulations on your successful Stebel horn installation Marty. I never leave home without one, I have a Stebel in each of our three scooters and will have one installed in the Super when I get it.

Charles, for some reason there is more space in the GTS than the GT for installing the Stebel horn.

Yeah, I saw the chrome one - thought about how to mount it externally on the legshield or to vacuum form a clear horncast. Only for a moment though - then sanity prevailed.

Would the 'compact' Stebel be easier to mount on a GT200? Any reason NOT to get a 'compact'?

This is the definitive model to get. Even though Motorsport doesn't mention it, this model officially has "compact" in the name.

For anyone in thinking of installing one in the future...

I installed mine without taking off the glove box. I used a coat hanger to fish the hot wire from the battery up to the front of the leg shield. I got the horn in by separating into the two pieces, maneuvering the compressor through the left knee cover and the horn through the horn cast and then putting it back together inside. It took maybe an hour.

I recently put the Stebel Nautilus on my 250 Super and the install was easier than the 200's install instructions. The sound is noticably different but still effective. My wife said my horn sounds like an old Buick!!! HAHAHAH!

My old horn was unscrewed and connectors taken off new horn with bendable bracket was put into place and connected. Plus you don't even need the bendable bracket but i got creative.

Ok i currently misquoted I have the single note compact I think. But it is the single note Stebel. Excellent horn!

I'm sorry, but these Stebel horn models seem Confusing:

i take it there are two (2) Stebel horns ("compact" and "non-compact")?

Do these 2 go by different names?

What is the specific name/model of compact?

What is the specific name/model of non-compact?

Which one requires a relay?

Is one easier/less hassle to mount on a GT200?

Again, thank you

No. In all cases, when we refer to a Stebel Nautilus horn on this forum, it refers to the This model. It isn't always identified as "Stebel Compact Nautilus" although it is, in fact, the compact model. I've never seen a Stebel Nautilus that wasn't the compact model, though I suppose it might exist somewhere.

This is not to be confused with the Stebel Magnum, which is a different horn altogether and only something like half as loud.

Put the fuse as close to the battery as you can manage. Any wire between the battery and the fuse is unprotected.

There is a "full size" Stebel Nautlus, though I doubt you can mount it in the legshield of a modern Vespa. The Stebel Nautlus compact is pretty much what everyone is referring to (as Jess noted above). The Stebel Magnum is much smaller, but I believe that it is an electrical horn, and not an air horn

I've been reading reports of the Stebel horns failing if water gets into them. Probably not much of a problem if mounting inside the legshield.

The Magnum is a much easier install; it's smaller and doesn't require a relay.

According to the Stebel site:
The Nautilus Air Horn gives you an earth shattering twin tone output of 139dB.
The Magnum Horn gives you a single note tone. The high tone is rated at 136dB...

The Magnum comes in either high or low tone (I got high*). The Nautilus has 2 tones, high and low. There are audio samples on the site.

I think the Nautilus certainly sounds much louder than the Magnum. Maybe it's the duotones or the fact that the Nautilus is an air horn while the Magnum is electric. Still, the Magnum is cheaper and a huge improvement over stock.

*So to speak.

Actually a 3db difference is a lot. Approximately double.
Wikipedia wrote:
The human perception of, for example, sound or light, is, roughly speaking, such that a doubling of actual intensity causes perceived intensity to always increase by the same amount, irrespective of the original level. The decibel's logarithmic scale, in which a doubling of power or intensity always causes an increase of approximately 3 dB, corresponds to this perception.
