I wish that the OP would post the VIN for the scooter that he bought. I strongly suspect that it might also be found with a little searching at a USA dealer who has it listed for sale.

Time will tell.

the tip off that this was a scam was the free shipping on something as large-heavy as a scoot

Yes it does, how do you think EBayMotors does business? He is covered. What they are counting on is for him not to dispute the auction till it's to late, due to the time it takes to ship the scooter. But if he flags it now pay-pal can with hold payment till he has the scooter in hand.

Heck I have friends that have bought $30,000 cars off ebaymotors sight unseen.

Deal canceled, money returned, .. lesson learned

Seller was not evasive and was quick to rectify the situation.

Chris, that's GREAT news!

Hopefully the other two buyers will post what happens with their sales in this thread.

Another reason to ALWAYS pay with a credit card, even if it's thru PayPal. If PayPal can't get his money back the credit card company can freeze the payment and he won't be liable for the payment amount.

Unless something has changed and I am not speaking first hand as I have a friend that was screwed on a paypal transaction - you are not protected with normal credit card protection when you pay through paypal. Someone with more knowledge can chime in but I wanted to point that out.

I googled this http://www.paypalsucks.com/credit-card-waiver.shtml

You're absolutely right about PayPal. They are not very helpful in case of a dispute and absolutely useless if you issue a chargeback from your credit card. Although you will probably get your money back in either case.

I should have said to use ONLY a credit card for online transactions.

Oh man, I hope this all works out in the end. I really do!!!
If you used PayPal, you should be okay.

************************

Buyer Protection when you shop on eBay
If you don't receive an eBay item that you purchased using PayPal, or what you receive is significantly not as described by the seller, your eligible transactions are covered for the full purchase price and original shipping cost. Find out more and see eligibility.

13.3 PayPal Buyer Protection

What are the eligibility requirements for PayPal Buyer Protection?

You must meet all of these requirements:

Use PayPal to purchase an eligible item on eBay.
Pay for the full amount of the item with one payment. Items purchased with multiple payments - like a deposit followed by a final payment - are not eligible.
Send the payment to the seller through:
The eBay "Pay Now" button, or
the eBay invoice,
Open a Dispute within 45 days of the date you sent the payment - then follow the online dispute resolution process described below under Dispute Resolution.

Keep your PayPal account in good standing.

The quirk in buying higher ticket items:

Pay for the full amount of the item with one payment. Items purchased with multiple payments - like a deposit followed by a final payment - are not eligible.

Issue resolved
Got a full refund yesterday. The seller voluntarily refunded the full purchase price. Looks like the wholesaler was the scammer. Thanks again to all of you for your support and helpful advice.

Apologize for not responding. I was not reading the posts after it became clear that things were not working out because it was kind of depressing. Yes, the VIN showed up as a scooter for sale in Colorado. That was when the seller voluntarily refunded the full purchase price. I am sorry again for not responding to your post.

Hey, NO problem..................I just wanted to see you get your money back. When I found that VIN number that the other buyer posted in this thread on the CO dealer's website................it told the whole story.

I'm really happy that you didn't lose any money.

Stockma, that is great news. Thanks for posting. A lot of us were curious as to how it worked it. Hope you find something else and are on the road soon. Good luck!

Can you explain how there was a seller and a wholesaler involved? Was the bike on consignment?

There was for sale, a perfect scoot
That Craig had on his list

It was so great, in every way
I just could not resist

Had not been dropped, the miles were low
The dents were never viewed

The picture showed the one good side
I didn't know I was screwed

The price was right, in fact so low
It took my breath away

Just wire the funds, to some third world
And it would be mine today

But what is this, a problem looms
I will not get my wheels

It couldn't be that I got fucked
On one of Craig's good deals

I trusted him, the guy that sells
To tell me fair and square

But I was wrong, the scoot is gone
And my money, God knows where
