I'm going to clean my air filter this weekend and I want to use something other than the spray-on air filter oil I've been using. My Vespa/Piaggio dealer is too far away to drop by and purchase the proper stuff that Piaggio recommends. What other specific brand works with the 1/2 oil and 1/2 gasoline method? I saw some at a Honda dealer and was ready to take it to the counter when I noticed on the label that it was not to be used with petroleum based products (gas).

What will work? Brand specific if possible. I want to go get something that I know will work.

Thanks- Bob

I just cleaned out my filter (warm water and shampoo...you could use dish washing detergent)...dried it out.

Then sprayed on Fab 1, it's on the Scooterwest website...you can also find it at most MC dealers. I let it soak in and pressed down to let it penetrate the foam filter. I found the Fab 1 kind of sticky.

The other option would be the 1/2 oil and 1/2 gas mix.

Believe both treatments are suppose to provide a means of having particulate matter "stick" to the air filter. Subsequently you wash out again and reuse until you need to replace.

I don't know which works best...perhaps others can chime in...

I've been using Yamaha brand Air Filter Oil. I checked the label and there's no warning regarding petroleum products. It works just fine. Got it at the Yamaha shop in town.

cheers

I use the motorcross type air filter oil which you can buy in spray can or fluid in a tin . This stays nice and sticky over the face of the filter .
I have found the 50/50 mix of petrol/engine oil tends to sink to the bottom of the filter housing leaving the top of the filter dry , It also fills up the bubbles on the filter housing .

Castrol makes a oil filter oil in a quart can. It cost me about $6.00. Been using that can for 5 years now and the best thing is its bright red. Easy to tell if that spot on your belt guard is a problem or not

Motorcross foam filter oil is the best money can buy as it has to be super sticky and filter really well in the worst of conditions!

Thanks for the repiles. I might run down to autozone to see if they have the Castrol. I want to get away from the spray stuff if I can. I saw some Motorex that might work but it was something like $18 for a small can. That's a bit expensive.

Now I understand why the Fab 1 is the way it is...sticky and more important viscous...you don't want too "runny" it will just collect in the bottom of the air filter housing and into the little bubble thingies...thanks for sharing your experience on the 50/50 mix...
