So sad indeed I grew up with him,Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. An era than can never be replicated

Very few were as credible as 'Uncle Walter'.
My favorite Kronkite moment, though, was when Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crashed and he announced a plane crash for the band "lin-yard skin-yard". |

He was a national treasure, and was the voice of history in the making for so many events while I was growing up. IMO there hasn't been anyone of his stature on televised news since he retired. Rest well, Uncle Walter.

I too am of the age to remember Huntley, Brinkly and of course Walter Cronkite.
Unlike today's news anchors who become People magazine celebrities where you know who they date, where they eat and all the other celeb garbage. Walter Cronkite delivered the news with credibility. No self promotion, a diehard newsmen who started out writing the news, not a talking head. It is hard for the 20 something crowd to fathom the world where there were just a few news outlets that you turned for your information, the radio, newspapers and a handful of TV networks. Light years away from the 500 channel, digital satelite, 24 hours, internet, twitter world of today. We looked for the truth from one man, the last of his kind. RIP Walter Cronkite. |

In an era of lightweights, people forget that Cronkite and Murrow were actual journalists who pioneered new (at the time) Media.
Cronkite actually parachuted into Normandy on D-Day to cover the story! An astute and unbiased reporter, he was instrumental in clarifying the lunacy of Vietnam. He was so trusted that LBJ said "when you've lost Cronkite, you've lost middle America." That kind of integrity and authority will never be duplicated in the commercial corporate entity that passes for "News" nowadays. P. |

And don't forget he was a member of Jimmy Buffets Corral Reefer Band, in voice at least, for the Beach House On The Moon tour.
