I'm trying to identify a 1970 Piaggio color, paint made by MaxMeyer,
MM paint code 1.298.2933
name: giallo cromo (or chrome yellow).
It looks something like this (Sakkerju's Vespa with original paint):

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text
Yes, it is supposed to look kind of greenish yellowish. Salima calls it vomit yellow...

Anyway, none of the local paint stores can find an equivalent color code they can work with. An article here on MV suggests that PPG (who bought MaxMeyer) took over their codes by just using the last four. But 2-933 at PPG is a red, so that doesn't work.

I don't have a color chip that everybody could easily match, so how can I make sure the paint shop is getting the right paint for me (actually, it would be for Salima's GTS--she wants it in that color, the color of her first Vespa when she was a teenager).

If you can get that scooter to a body shop that uses PPG Paints, they can get a color match done with a special camera.

Windbreaker,

I've been looking or a conversion chart for over 4 years, and have not found one yet. Even though there are some conversion charts out there for PPG products, for some reason PPG doesn't list any for the Max Meyer codes.

Maybe I've just been looking in all the wrong places for the past few years?

I think if a useful one existed, it would be on every forum's FAQ's.

Please keep us posted if you do find one!

So.... Here's a photo from a post on an FChat thread from a couple years ago that I dug up which has a color that might be in the same neighborhood as what you're looking for. Ferrari used Glidden Salchi S.p.A. paints around the same time that Salima's 1st Vespa would've been manufactured. There is a color on the following color chart that is 5th down from the Carrozzeria Scaglietti top card that I think might be close.

http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=136662728&postcount=66

The only problem is, I have no idea what that particular color is called! I do know that the color of the card above it is called Verde Germoglio and had the Glidden paint code "20 G 465."

I know that this is really just a shot in the dark, as I know next to nothing about how modern paint shops work. I just thought that if I could find you a color that appeared to be close plus a name & color of the adjacent color on the chart that you might be able to get what you're looking for.

Best of luck.

The ppg codice I have on a chart is 933, not 2-933. What result does that give?

Let me find the links I've bookmarked...

Sorry, that's all I've got, and it seems that the US PPG codes may be different than the European ones.

Good luck.

Vomit yellow...that is a close description Laughing emoticon

Too bad that my 'paint reproducer' didn't put any record of the mixture on my pot of 'photograpically reproduced' paint-up.
I will try to make a feasable sample on a piece of metal/paper...

PS: I used too dislike the colour...but it actually is lovely!

Arno,

While looking for a color for my Sprint, I did notice that (like today) many of the autos were painted with colors from the same paint vendor, but named them differentlly. I found matching colors for a 1970 Sprint in the 1970-1972 Datsun lineup, and those paint codes are easier to find.

Google some old Datsun and some of the Euro automakers of the year you're looking for, and you may be surprised.

I have seen a metallic version of this color on BMW cars, particularly E46 M3s and Z3/M roadsters. I have listed a link. In the US, it was called Phoenix Yellow or Gold. If you want the exact BMW German name, I could probably get it for you from the a BMW message board that I use to frequent. I kind of like the metallic version better, as much as I like either of them.

I think that one is close but not green enough. Also, the Vespa paint is not metallic.

Here is another giallo cromo application:

You might also look at Moto Guzzi's yellow/green. Looks very similar to that to my eyes.

do a search for "Moto Guzzi V7 Café Classic" on google.

Good find. It does look similar (and one never knows how the color was tweaked for reproduction). Appears to be metallic, no? That would rule it out.

Could be or maybe not
This 67 sprint on the Portland CL doesn't say its been repainted so it could be the color your looking for. Sounds like he has documentation that could help you if it is the correct color.

Thanks, Puff. That's a nicely restored Vespa.
Something doesn't jive with that 1965 50S, though. According to my information, there was no square headlight in that year and model range. Also, the paint looks like it is a yellow yellow, with greens from the grass reflecting in it. I could be wrong there, though.
