I have a 2007 GT and every since I have had it, it makes a loud noise after the engine gets hot (about 30 minutes of good riding). It sounds like a goose and a donkey (honk sound with a haw) when you start. It is very loud and annoying. It has been in the shop several times, yet they cannot find out what is wrong. Does anyone else have this issue? If so, was it able to be repaired? Any advice would be appreciated.

I have never heard what you are describing, maybe a video on YouTube would help.

My 2005 GT200 makes a noise that perhaps sounds like what you're describing. I would call it more of a rattley growl or groan though.

The previous owner took it into the shop several times when it was new and I've had it into a completely different shop twice and have specifically mentioned the issue, however nobody can find anything wrong. I don't believe the mechanics ever hear the sound because the scooter sits and cools down for an hour or so before they get around to looking at it, then they ride it around the block and everything sounds fine.

I seem to sense an almost imperceptible slipping feeling like I don't have quite as much power on take-off when this happens. It only happens when I come off a light or stop-sign after I've riden for at least a half hour.

I'll be very interested to find out if anyone has solved this mystery.

It could be your clutch slipping upon takeoff. If there are a lot of miles on the bike it could need replacing. More likely it just needs the dust and accumulated worn pad material cleared from the housing. This can be done by popping off the chromed plastic cover on the transmission and shooting some aerosol break cleaner in there. Make sure to put newspaper under the scoot since the liquid will run out and it stains concrete. I'd be surprised if a certified mechanic did not know about this fix if indeed this is the problem.

Certainly a good thing to check, but the scooter has done this since it was brand new...

Use the search function, try 'GT200 grinding noise'.
There are a gazillion posts on this topic and a number of easy fixes.
If it is this problem then is basically clutch slippage/shudder. The easiest fix is a squirt of Brakleen into the clutch housing.
Good luck.

Hey outinga,

I see you are in Atlanta GA. I can only assume you've got southern-style high humidity.

If it's anything like it is here in Southeast Texas, the humidity adds a great deal to the aforementioned belt slip/grind/groan that you are experiencing. Occasionally blowing the dust out of the transmission will help with this a lot.

As Boulty said do a search and you'll find you are not alone.

PS
I find a full face helmet cure it by about 40%

That is the exact issue that I am having. I will try the cleaning thing, but if not I will post back. It has been to 2 different service centers and has yet to be corrected. I hope is it something as easy as a clean up.

Thanks to all who have posted.

I hosed down my GT's "private area" with Brakeleen for the second time yesterday. I found this fix on previous posts about 10 days ago. The first fix mentioned was blowing out the bell with high pressure air. The first time I did it there was a fair amount of dust. Yesterday it was little or none. The Brakeleen is what does the trick. I'm thinking about buying the stuff by the case. But even with this it is still only good for a few days. However the dealer told me earlier that the best way to prevent the problem was to perform Jack Rabbit starts. While that does work when the bike is cold, it may just make it worse once it has warmed up and I have to make repeated stops. So I'm going to try doing it "the regular way" to see how that works.

Brakleen work so well because the pads on the clutch are similar to pr the same material as brake pads. It ia also, by yje way, a fine hornet killer amd rifle receiver cleaner too.

The truely best way mitigate the problem is to crack open the transmission cover, remove and disassemble the clutch and clean and dress the clutch bell with a ScotchBrite pad, per Greasy's advice. The noise is a result of a glazed or polished bell surface and an accumulation of clutch dust inside the tranmission cover. Brakleen is a temporary fix but the wrenching method is the "real" way.

I haven't personally cracked the clutch case myself. But when the problem first arose nearly a year ago the mechanic at the local Vespa dealer did rough up the bell per instructions from Vespa USA. That helped for a few days or maybe a week and then I was back to square one. Maybe when I get more time later this month I'll take the plunge myself just so I can see the area first hand.

Mind you don't use the Brakleen too much. It can disolve the grease in the drive belt idler wheel bearing. I would agree to cracking the case occasionally and abrading the clutch bell housing. Interestingly my clutch (2003, 30000km) rarely slips these days.
