Yesterday I filled up my scoot for the first time. I had already read about how tricky it can be to not spill, so I thought I was prepared. Not so, I hosed my hands with gas.
So, today I went and bought a Mccuff nozzle attachment thingy. Expensive at about $20 for a big rubber extension. But, by jove, it works! Filled the tank up first time, pumped until it clicked off and my scoot was full. Did not spill a drop.
Highly recommended.

p.s. sorry if everyone already knows about this product!

ROFL! What timing... just to add some fuel to the fire, I decided to buy a McCuff yesterday. When I tried it out, it spilled gas all over the fkn place! Maybe I didn't have the nozzle in as far as I should have, or maybe I should try pumping at less than full blast. I figured it would be a convenient way to not have to hold the vent tube up on the nozzle, but now I'm thinking I might be better off doing that. Still, it should at least come in handy for my Heinkels, my P or my Sprint, if I ever get any of them back on the road.

This product was being hawked here like mad by a spamming troll. He got his ass handed to him pretty quick, and banned from the forum. That, and of the few who actually tried it, most of them said it sucked. Maybe you lucked out and actually got one that worked.

Read this thread from 2006 on how to avoid overflows [keep the nozzle handle over the 'pet carrier' bucket].:

https://modernvespa.com/forum/topic4075?highlight=spill+gas

Searching will also locate a number of earlier threads on the "McCuff" funnel, with consensus running in the negative.

Cheers,

Dooood, so sorry that I started this thread!
I tried the method of pumping at an angle with the handle over the pet carrier. That's when I soaked my hands with gas..
The 'mccuff' worked perfectly. I got mine at the Harley shop, maybe it's slightly different? (apart from having the Harley logo).

True all dat. But in the Bay Area I've noticed several of my go-to gas stations that used to have good nozzles that shut off correctly with my scoot now have some new nozzle that sucks ass...and blows gas. I'm guessing it has to do with the environmental upgrades gas stations were supposed to do to comply with some new CA law a few months ago. Anybody have the skinny?

Pumping at what "angle"?? -Maybe that's your problem?
You just hold the pump handle UPRIGHT with the handle's end directly back over the pet carrier, push the nozzle down as far as it will go, squeeze lightly so the gas doesn't gush out at full force, and remove it W/O trying to add extra gas after it clicks off!
-Works perfectly every damn time once you get the hang of it, and it's far better than having to store a gas smelling hunk of rubber on your scoot..! 8)

But you're new yet, I suppose.... Laughing emoticon

In CA the pumps have these miserable accordion attachments on the end for CARB requirements that make it a lot harder to fill up than in other states.
Do you have those in Jersey?

You could also create a problem by overfilling using that thing.

I removed the charcoal canister and rollover valve on mine, so I just watch for the gas pooling under my scooter to know when it is full.

Actually, the pumps seem to work pretty well in Minnesota, so I have yet to have an overfill.

Yes. But in most cases the accordian rubber pushes back far enough so the pump works okay if you push the nozzle all the way into the filler neck. If it doesn't, then sometimes you have to peel the rubber back a little by hand, but that's rare...
Just give up the idea of having to WATCH the gas go in-- Put the rear of the handle over the pet carrier, push the nozzle allaway down and squeeze lightly, not with full pressure. The pump then almost always clicks off automatically at the right time!
Try it; after you get it, you'll throw the McCuff away! (I did...) Laughing emoticon

Over the pet carrier works fine by me, no spills so far (12,000 miles).
Pumps in florida only have splash guards, at least where I'm live.

We should take a poll to see how many of us have never had a problem filling up.

I'm not sure where the gas tank is located on Vespas.... but on my BV mine is in the middle of my step thru.... if I do overfill it's not that big of an issue...

In my neck of the woods you need to pull the accordion rubber up with your hands for it to work on a bike. Which is how I doused myself with gas, as this prevents the pump from automatically clicking off.

The plus side to my LT is that it's all enclosed and doesn't have a pet carrier so overfilling isn't a problem. Funny how i've done it once on the LX where it is

Do the fuel pumps in England have a big rubber accordion EVAP capture mechanism on the end like in California?

No, it doesn't! What prevents the automatic click-off is not pushing the nozzle ALL THE WAY DOWN! There's a small hole in the side of the nozzle that's a sensor; when the gass hits it the pump stops. If you fudge by not pushing the nozzle all the way in it will never sense the gas and will not click off! -That's what you're doing...

I don't live in California, but we have the same accordian rubber sleeves over the nozzle. I have not had a spillover mainly by judging how much gas I'll need by the mileage I've ridden. As I get closer to the estimate, I slow down. The forums here were very helpful, so from the beginning I knew how to align the nozzle, parallel to the scooter. No spills (so far).

On my LXV I never had a problem. Almost never spilled over. Then I changed to a GTS 300 and I spill over like crazy. Same station, same pumps. So I don't think the LX is a fair comparison to the GTS. Something is different.

I've resorted to holding up the nozzle and going so slow it is barely filling. Visual stop versus the pump auto stop works for me, but is a pain in the arse.

I sometimes overfill when trying to fill to the brim. With some pumps, the gas will surge up the neck and spill over if you pump too fast, even though the tank may not be full. I usually just go slowly and peek down in there when the nozzle stops automatically. If I want to really get it up to the brim, I will rest the nozzle opening just inside the neck, pull up the cuff, and pump very slowly until it's really full.

Now let me tell you how I pump gas...

Yup, they're required by state law. I think they supposedly help prevent vapors from escaping into the air. Other states have begun adopting them so they must have some benefit. (Though since we're talking about state emissions controls here, they may just be for show.)
