Hey guys, I live on Capitol Hill in Seattle and parking is a pain...not because it's hard to find, but because there are a lot of drunk drivers around here and I am afraid of my Vespa getting tipped over (read: again!) What do you think about this spot...legal...or no?

Likely illegal, but I think it improves the overall aesthetic. Might be more apt to be fudged with by drunk pedestrians.

If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that it doesn't matter whether "it" is legal or illegal - it only matters if the officer that sees "it" (whatever "it" may be) finds it objectionable.

Have a look in the first and second pics...where the far "No Parking" board is...when that wasnt there, I was parking there, which is technically the planting strip, even though it's paved...and got a ticket. So, my question is...if they are gonna ticket me...why don't they ticket the planter right behind me? It's on the sidewalk...right?

Illegal, but I would park it there too. However its under an air conditioning unit. Is your bike getting wet?

Why not ask a Lawyer who is licensed in WA and familiar with the ordinances of Seattle for his opinion? What we think is about as valid as a bucket of spit. Your scoot does look pretty parked there, I guess. Al |

I think Cap Hill parking is a pain because it IS so hard to find. You don't lock it in anyway?

Lock it in? What does that mean? There are about 5-6 "motorcycle spots" which are always free, but they happen to be under telephone poles, and my bike always seems to be covered with shite. Yeah, they do eat their young....I picture them like Dae-Su Oh in Old boy eating the live octopus:

I believe over here that's legal as long as a) you pushed it there, and b) there is enough room for a wheelchair to pass.
I do realise this is irrelevant and no help whatsoever. |

If you are so concerned why don't you lock it up? You know with a lock. The question was asked once but kinda flew over your head.

Cop frowns, shakes his head, says, "Nope." Guy points, says, "What about that guy, he's parked there." Cop says, "He didn't ask." Don't ask the meter maid. If she's told you that it's illegal (even if it's really not...), and then you park there anyway, she HAS to give you a ticket, just to save face. If she can walk happily down the street and not "notice" it, then all is well. Put an inconspicuous cover on it, lock it on tight, so it's hard to lift to see what's under it (or read the plate), and see what happens. Worse comes to worse, you get a ticket (which is only valid if they write a plate number on it), which is fine for me, since I don't have to pay it. - Eric |

In my city that would be illegal, but it surely depends on your local ordinance. Nice job hiding it behind the planter though.
And by the way, I'm sure if you unscrewed your license plate and bolted it to the planter box that a meter maid WOULD give it a ticket. Some enlightened cities (not mine, but we're trying to get it passed through City Council) do allow scooters, but not motorcyles, to park on the sidewalk for free as long as they're not obtrusive. Toronto does this, and New York City too, I believe. Motorcycles don't get to park on the sidewalk, but do get free parking in existed metered (or display ticket) spots. It's trying to encourage scooter/motorcyle use to reduce both fuel consumption and traffic congestion in the inner core of urban centres. Seattle's pretty progressive, isn't it? Try to float it past city council using NYC as an example. |

In Detroit that would be illegal, but only if the ONE COP who is on his beat outside the Opera House sees it. My buddy parked his scooter in a similar location for probably 200+ days and until Dudley-Do-Wrong discovered it there, it was fine. And this with the meter-maid driving by probably 10 times a day.
Also illegal in other Michigan cities like Royal Oak (bastards!), but not apparently enforced in Ferndale or Berkley (if you push it up on the sidewalk.) I love that idea of a brick-printed scooter cover! Either that or a bright yellow/green/reflective with ELECTRICAL IGNITION or MEN WORKING ABOVE or something vaguely dangerous-sounding on it. |

In Boston, you would almost be guaranteed a ticket. The city is hungry for money, and they are coming down on motorcycle parking as a resource. Motorcycle must be parked on the street and parallel to the curb here... no freebies on the sidewalk or perpendicularly between cars. Still happens all the time, but most likely at some point over the day a cop will nab you here.
And people laugh at me for having a 50 I still contend there's no better way to get around Boston than on my spunky little ET2, and parking is a major reason for that. The thing which really pisses me off is the P200 is actually SMALLER than the 50cc ET2, and weighs the same. So it is an easy theft if someone was so inclined. The ET can be parked and chained up safely out of the way on the sidewalk, while the P is relegated to the street where there are no ground anchors or anything... just begs for someone to screech up in a pickup and take back off. |

How much is a parking ticket? Here its $25. Worth the money to find out if its okay to park there. If there is a meter maid my guess is that you'll get a ticket, they're there for a reason after all - to make the city money. But you won't know till you try!

I can't think of a single place I've heard where parking a motorvehicle (not a moped) on the sidewalk is legal. You just risk it. Pretty sure most written tests for your license even mention things like this. I can totally tell that picture was taken with a Lecia |

Right...you're right. I ACTUALLY was suggesting that the city write a ticket for a planting fixture. I'm calling the parking violation # right now! "Yes, I'd like to report an illegally parked...errr...vehicle. Make? Ummmm English Ivy? Colour? Oh, that's easy....green! Year? Man, nevermind...just forget it" LOL
