Parking on the sidewalk is totally illegal in NYC. The city has a habit of both towing AND issuing tickets. Been like that for about 4 years now, since the uptick in scooter ownership and the fact that scooters no longer "fly under the radar".

Andrea
My bad. There was a link to a commissioned (by Piaggo )traffic congestion study that advocated for the use of many more scooters in NYC and I thought it had to do with parking.

Anyhoo, it's for sure legal in Toronto, Canada. As xantufrog has pointed out re. Boston, I don't know how they make the distinction between a "motorcyle" versus a "limited speed motorcycle" that cannot exceed 70km/h and fits small displacement Scooters and all Mopeds, however. Do they eyeball it, look whether or not its a step-through design, or look at the type of plate? My Super 150, while still smaller than some new 50cc scooters, is technically licensed and plated as a motorcycle because of its displacement.

I'm sure in court one could argue to spirit of the law if getting a ticket (showing its smaller dimensions) even if it is technically not licensed as a LSM.

The thing is, once the ticket is written, it's written. Private property or not, it would then be on you to take the time out of your life/daily schedule/whatever to go to court and fight it using that as your defense. If you're right, you've saved yourself what - $30-60? - and have lost at least half a day of your life you'll never get back. If you're wrong, you're out the $$$ + all the other stuff already mentioned.

If it's private property, ask the owner's permission. This kind of thread only serves as fodder for derision on the bbs.

Then you have to go to court with proof that the piece of land is in private ownership, and something showing proof that the land owner gave you permission, whilst at the same time making sure that you're not getting the property owner in trouble for allowing something that his property is not zoned for.

Its how people get out of this type of ticket in other places.

So you park your bike at that place with the awning on capitol hill? Since you posted the picture of the building with the address on the awning and have now informed everyone one that you don't lock it and have shot hundreds of photos of it and tooted your own horn so much why don[t you tell the world the name of the street you park it on? You see what I'm saying? You want to keep that thing, use some sense.

Ahhhhh, but didn't Pilate say something along the lines of, "I find no reason to hold this man, go forth and do with him what you will, but I wash my hands of the whole thing"?

Part of the point of that story, if I'm not mistaken, is that an innocent man got screwed for pissing off the wrong people. Had he been guilty, the whole "sacrifice of the innocent" concept of Christianity (also present in many other religions) would lack a foundation.

Those who actually practice their religions may be able to express this better than I can, as I've seen the insides of a Hell of a lot more bars than churches...

Sorry, I picture Jesus on a skateboard.

And, somewhat realistically, if you had the permission of the property owner (or WERE the owner), constructing a shed, brick-patterned or otherwise, looking like those that house some buildings' trash cans (or extending such a shed which actually DOES contain trash cans), you could have a weather resistant, burglar resistant, discreet place to store a scooter right on the sidewalk. Hmmmmm.

You can get one of those plastic deck boxes and modify it into a scoot-garage that will cover up your bike and keep it out of parking Nazi eyes. Check with your building owner first.

I just moved to this bldg in May, but I'm not sure of which garage you are speaking of. Could you possibly PM me the location? The bldg manager said she's rent me a spot...for $125! Which is, in my opinion way too much. there is this piece of unused parking lot at the back of the lot which I offered her $60/month for and she said no.
I mostly park it in my GF's locked garage. I am going to get a "Grip Lock" (actually probably gonna order it today!) and a cover. Any recommendations for a good cover? Also, I liked the yellow, but LOVE the white!

Ah! Someone who knows the area...ok, based on the fact there is a garage right next door I'd say stay off the sidewalk, get a spot in the garage before someone steals your ride.

During the summer I have no problem paying for this, but when Seattle's tourism economy dies down, it's tough enough as is to make ends meet. If the economy were to pick back up a bit, I may be able to make it work. $125 just seems like WAY too much for UNCOVERED UNSECURED parking. It'd be nice if it were covered/secured. Also, it's kinda the principle...there is a spot that is well large enough for my scooter which they are making $0 on right now, which I offered them $60/month for. But they said no. It just seemed strange.

Yet $10,000 does not seem like way too much for a camera?

$800 does not seem like way too much for a designer 3/4 helmet? (twice)

Are you missing the point? Wait...yes you are.

There's a garage right where the motorcycle shop was. I'm almost positive they rent spots by the month. Maybe you can ask if there is another motorcycle or scooter renting a spot who you can share with. That's what I did when I lived on the hill.

And no, I'm not dead! I was slogging away in school while working full time for the last year but am now free with nothing to do but work!
