Be careful when selling a scooter (or anything else) on craigslist, especially if you use Gmail too!
Getting a return gmail inquiry about my selling a scooter on craigs,
I mistakenly violated one of my principals and opened a link in the message.

Boom!! In came the "Protections System" virus, and also the "windowsclick" Google-affecting redirection virus.
"Protection System" gives you constant phony Win Security warnings about virus invasions,
and if you fall for them and click "enable protection" you get clobbered even further.
"Windowsclick" always randomly redirects any Google search result you click on,
so you never get what you're searching for!

Fortunately all this crap can be removed by free anti-virus software tools such as "AVG Free" and "MalwareBytes Free" programs!!
But it still is a minor painnnabutt!

I feel you pain. I had a virus that redirected my google searches too but I didn't know where it came from. I ran a scan for the Conflicker virus and it fixed it all. The strange thing was the scan didn't say I had the Conflicker virus either.

I was trying to install SP3 and running virus checks for Confiker and ended up getting exactly what you described. Couldn't get far enough to run more scans, so I just re-installed Windows. And screwed something up in my bios. And re-installed Windows. And my external drive died. And...

I'm just going to get a new laptop for myself for Christmas that doesn't have 3 Windows installations on it, and isn't 4 1/2 years old. Then I'm going to go all Office Space on this one.

WADR...
Let's call this exactly what it is. I use Craig's List and Gmail all of the time, and I have not had trouble. WADR, it wasn't Gmail or Craig's List that got you a virus, and you said so yourself. It was you.

Most of the viral plague could be averted if people stopped doing stupid things. Or bought a... scooter, and just rode it all of the time and stopped pissing around online. You thought I was gonna say Mac, eh?

Meeting people from casual encounters on Craigslist also gave me viruses.

(just kidding. I couldn't resist!)

Your welcome... 8)
Actually what I had to do was look up the "System Protect" virus in a non-Google search engine first (the virus had disabled Google searches!), which gave me data that pointed me to a program called Avenger. This data showed me how to dnld Avenger, but then it also told me what text parameters to enter into it for clearing up infected registers and drivers corrupted by the "System Protect(?)" and "Windowsclick" trojans!

Then, after that, I was able to dnld and run MalwareBytes Free (MBAM Free), which eliminated the rest of the problems.
Actually MBAM is a very good Virus/Trojan checker and cleaner for almost any problems IMO. It seems to be able to get stuff that Spybot, AdAware, and AVG miss....

There's also an excellent computer forum called PCTechTalk, where you can get free excellent assistance for ANY computer problem! They're absolutely great, IMO! 8)
