I am looking to sell my 1965 Vespa VBB with 173000 miles on it (so the title says...)

I was wonder what kinda of price I should ask for it... It is in great shape and runs like new. I will included some pictures so you can get a better idea.

Where did you purchase it from? Who did the restoration work?

Hopefully you remembered to turn the fuel tap to the off position.

A local guy restores Vespas and I purchased from him. The bike is in great shape.

And yes, I turned the fuel valve off...haha, thanks.

So... the bike looks very much like an import bike. I'm not going to say viet or indian ..i don't know... but it WASN'T restored in the states.

For one, it has a key on it in that spot every viet bike has a key installed - next to the helmet hook. I don't know any shop in the US who would install something like this, and put it there. Also, asian lock on the glovebox.

If you bought it from someone who said it came from the states, they're lying. It's from asia. That's not a statement as to whether it's a good or bad asian restoration ...just ...that's where it's from. Possibly they did a "restoration" of this bike, and it was from asia originally and already had that lock / key in it.

What's it worth? There's a buyer for every price. I imagine that bike was probably imported and sold on ebay for $3k or something like that.

I personally have yet to see a VBB that's worth over 2k, though, unless it has some serious custom work on it, or it's original condition paint and the whole deal.

The scooter is actually running when they took the pics. Look at the second last picture and you can see the flywheel is in motion.

It also has a P-series center stand just like all the viet-bikes.

Looks VERY asian to me. Like the rest have said, it's worth what someone is willing to pay. Clean it up, list it as is, and see what happens. GOOD LUCK.

I looked at two of the large ass pictures and read what you guys said. And I would have to say it's quite hard to gage what its worth with out seeing and riding it. I didn't see the key but that make me think [redacted] because of the non-quasi mod asian stuff. I personally have no experience with their restorations. But non the less, it's guilt buy association in the eyes of any educated buyer, and caps it at $2000 in my eyes. That's if it isn't a looks like a great restoration in person. Sorry if that's not what you want to hear.

Just curious, have you seen an Indian bike wired like that?

So you do know some funky stuff about this scoot... for example you know that's a P stand. How much else do you know about how it has been restored? Where are you located, you said it was restored locally?

Hmmm... no, i don't think so. Usually bikes with the black clamshell speedo and black grips that are VBB's are indian ( a lot of the bikes i'm seeing where people have claimed they got them from scooterworks, coincidentally ). Handlebar switch with red buttons .... this particular kickstart rubber with the 4-5 channels in it, versus the waffle pattern.. (bajaj )... a 50's acorn taillight or an acorn tailight with a black gasket on it, bajaj or LML engines

there's a lot of defacto indian parts, as opposed to the ones we're all used to seeing on viet bikes : keyswitch next to the helmet hook, plastic PX centermat, p-series centerstand, 10" conversions on 8" bikes, 10" centerstands on 8" bikes, p-series stand boots, chome seat parts, chrome scalloped piece around front fork, wrong badges for the model, exceptionally rare models that vietnam wouldn't likely have ( or sell if they had), two tone paint, two tone seats, excessive chrome accessories, chrome wheel rims, incorrect legshield beading, etc.

Something's up with the electrics, too. On the same pic #2159 where you can see the broken flywheel fin (btw, I have one of those too, that I broke when using a screwdriver to hold the flywheel in place to undo its nut) there's a wire with a boot over it leading to the HT coil. Something is taped to the harness rubber outer -- probably some sort of quick disconnect, but I dunno.

What's weird is that you've got a back wire OUTSIDE the rest of the wiring loom (usually inside it), then a green wire with a boot over it (to insulate a connection, presumably), then the yellow wire to the HT coil, and all of this is outside the junction box (so how does the kill switch wire connect?). I can understand one colour change from the main harness to the junction box, and then a separate lead to the HT coil, but why three colours, all outside the junction box?

Also, on the flywheel's inspection hole -- shouldn't that be a rubber bung that gets put in there? It looks like a metal piece on the pic, but it's hard to tell. If it is, it would be wicked hard to change the points gap through that much smaller hole that's available.

Thanks for the input guys...

Im from harrisburg PA, Do you know anyone around the area that restores them? I will have to look through my paper work to see if I can find where I bought it. Its been about 4-5 years that I owed it.

You guys are awesome, I was thinking about getting a vespa tattoo, does anyone have them on here? Let me know...

I thought you said you bought it off a local guy that restores them?

There are only a couple of people around Harrisburg that restore scooters. What town did your guy come from?

It's a small town not far from Harrisburg called... VIETNAM! Actually, the paint looks too good to be a Bodge bike. The Vietnamese put the paint on so thick, that you can't see the edges of the seams. On this bike you can see the edges of the seams. So the paint at least is better than a typical Bodge bike. Plus the Vietnamese would never let the fan shroud go out the door like that.

Any VBB after '64 in the USA is suspect to me even without pictures.
1965 is when the 150/125 Super started hitting N. American dealers.
