On my new Piaggio BV 250, the specs call for AGIP Rotra 80W-90. I need to top the oil a bit, not a lot, and figured it wouldn't hurt to have some on hand.

I then checked my Vespa S 150 specs to see if the two, by chance, would be using the same rear hub oil. Surprise: the Vespa uses the same 4-stroke oil it calls for for the motor (AGIP city hi tec 4t). I double checked, thinking I was reading it wrong. But yes, that is what it calls for.

Does that make sense to anyone?

Meanwhile, does everyone have the trouble finding AGIP that I am having? Is Motul equally good if that is all I can find? And why the heck doesn't the dealer carry AGIP?

Me and two others ended up pooling our resources and buying a case of the spec'd AGIP engine and rear end oil from the US dealer. He was very very helpful. He has posted somewhere here before recently.

My dealer carries AGIP products.- Vespa of Cleveland. I still have what's left of a liter of Tutela hub fluid and I'm currently using Motorex oil. I'll switch to AGIP when I run out of the current stuff.

i've used this and the tutela ZC90 for many years and i am very happy with both.

oh, and the motul comes with a nifty little pour spout to help things along.

I spoke to Piaggio Customer Service and was told the Castrol Synthetic 75W-90 would be fine to use.

my dealer uses Lucas Hi Performance 80W-90 gear oil for servicing the rear hub of the Vespa, Piaggio, and Aprilia scooters; I bought some Amsoil synthetic 80W-90 gear oil for top offs; both surpass the GL-3 standard that the owner's manual calls for;

my LX 150 is still too new for it's first service, but the Piaggio BV 250 that preceeded my LX had BOTH the engine oil and hub oil changed (to me it only makes sense since the entire powertrain -- engine, cvt, and final drive in the rear hub -- is 'breaking in' ); hope this clarifies your question...

Absolutely! It needs to be changed. Whoever told you otherwise needs to read their manuals!

You local quick oil change dealer should stock 75W-90 GL-4 synthetic oil, for instance Penzoil or Quaker State brand. It likely won't be on display on the rack. One bottle is just about a lifetime supply.

Cheers and good luck,
Bob

This is one time I'd say the word 'need' isn't applicable. Change the hub oil every couple of rear wheel removals - fine. But at the first service? I really don't see the point, from any chemistry, physics or engineering POV.

I have a GTS250 but my book says Nothing about using synthetic oil for the hub only the engine oil?? Is synthetic really required for hub. I just changed mine and used regular 75w 90 gear oil!

We the not so qualified and unwashed tend to follow the prescribed maintenance. Wouldn't this create a problem with warranty? Why wouldn't you change the fluid on the first service? Over the years there have been reports of seeing bits in the changed oil, imagination?

Engine oil certainly - but the hub oil is a whole different issue. Change it by all means - I'd always advise folk to do so - but I do question the 'need'.

The manual also suggests a complete service (that's belt check etc as well) every 6,000 miles or 'annually' - if the scoots only been ridden 100 miles in that year, I'd question the 'need' even for an engine oil change, let alone a belt check.

Oh, OK, it's in "The Book" - so it must be true. Hmm...

Much of the advice given on this forum is based on opinion, often without any solid reason, other than just to question the validity of the manuals. "It works for me" or "I have driven XXX miles without any problems" is not a true test.

the first oil change is primarly to ensure the engine is free from any bits that might have been left over in the assembly stage and any shavings that occur during the first few miles as all the metal meshes together. Same should go for the hub oil as the gears are doing the same. The oils are not even close to being used up in their life cycle. its just a first flushing so to speak.

Arthur11 wrote:

The recommended oil is Tutela Matryx Moto Rider synthetic multidegree SAE 75W/85 API GL4 (according to the book). Piaggio seems to recommend synthetic fluids for everything on their scoots. Their engineers know more than I do.

Cheers and good luck,
Bob

While I get your point, you're expanding beyond the issue at hand, which I thought was changing at first service. For the life of me I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't see the need. Once done it's a non issue for many miles, even by the book.

Remember the gears do not get the work out that the engine does and the level is much less critical. In fact, it seems to always look good when you change it. Any gear oil of the right weight would work fine. Seriously, I don't think there is an advantage of synthetic over dino gear oil. My Vespa 300 and Vino 125 both ask for dino hub oil, and my Scarabeo 100 calls for synthetic, so that's what I use, but I doubt it matters. Some people NEVER change the hub oil. It would be bad to run out though, and it's easy to change. I change mine every other engine oil change.

I use 75-90 Mobil 1. Over 2500 miles. Lots of interstate 70+ mph No problem. Good quality oil, slight weight difference insignificant. Regular changing more important.
