Hint: click on "Get Directions", then click on "Show options", and select the "Avoid highways" option if you want to find routes for slower roads only.

We use maps.google.com to plan our routes. After the route is planned, you can use TYRE and convert it to a format that some GPS units can read. I have done that a couple of times and it works great. I have the Tomtom Rider 2. The google maps will let you alter the course and zoom into the street level. TYRE is a program that a lot of Harley riders use. It is a little complicated but can be manipulated as well.

Maps for bicycling are nice too. Local bike shops have them, or you could check Adventure Cycling for multi-state routes.

Just click on a state and then click on the area you're interested in. It gives you a nice map with various routes. You can get information on the road etc. by clicking on it. Looks like an interesting way to set up a ride.

There are also rider comments at the bottom of each map.

MadMaps makes maps specifically for motorcycle riders, but they work for scooters too since the focus is scenic.

Many scooter shops sell them, e.g., Scooteria in SF, plus they are available through Amazon. If you're an AMA member you can get a discount on them as well.
