Modern Vespa

I'm trying to avoid spilling the beans on the exact numbers involved. I tried to scale it so that getting a target is achievable for a lot of people, but that gave *me* five targets, which is embarrassing. I compromised by setting the scale high enough so that I wouldn't be maxed out on targets right away while still getting some people a half or a whole star.

By making the karma indicators visible, I'm anticipating a strong uptick in post ratings. I'm counting on that fact. The number of positive ratings necessary to earn a half star isn't really very high at all, numerically speaking, but the rating system has been underused since I introduced it. If necessary, I'll rescale, but I think we should see more people with targets under their avatar shortly.

Jess, is your ultimate goal to improve the lot by dangling a carrot, in hopes that helpful posts will be made?

Is this a way of thinning the herd

and having the subtle effect of creating a caste system of those with targets/those without?

There are probably many here who wonder, as I do, if a target will ever grace their avatar. Not knowing if it will be on the next post or the next hundred is a real poser.

I've now re-scaled the translation from raw votes into targets so that they're harder to earn as you go up, and easier to earn in the beginning. That drops me down to three targets (as of this writing) and brings more people up to the level of having at least half a target.

Just to be evil, though, the negative scale is uniform, and each half step is easier to "earn".

I hope everyone has a GREAT day, that ought to be worth 1/1000th of a point. Since I'm not much of a Vespa repair person I guess I can't be of too much help to others, but if you ever need any advice on air-cooled VW's, what that is a different story.

The definition of the word immutable is an object whose nature can not be changed. So immutable karma would be karma which is incapable of being changed. I'm not sure I understand what you are saying.

Is there a way (other than scrolling every thread) to see which posts have received positive/negative karma?

I can see who gave me a thumbs-up/down, but I'm curious as to which posts garnered the rating.

If a post is marked "neutral," that means it's received equal ups and downs, right?

Well, not really. Moderators can see the karma stats page (and I believe that includes you) but nobody else can see who is rating who.

I'd better get out my list of people I've wronged and try to make it all right to serve Karma...
