So, my 2003 et4 was running poorly. Had to baby the throttle up to about twenty mph and then it would take off fine, no problems idling. I decided to remove the carb and clean out the jets. my low jet, idle jet, was clogged. once i put everything back together, and i did so properly, it would start and idle but i could not give it steady throttle. i had to twist the throttle in quick bursts to get it moving then hold it just above idle to maintain the speed. This is where it gets strange to me... I covered the main air intake, and now it accelerates quicker than ever, but once i hit about thirty mph it bogs down and won't speed up at all. If anyone has any ideas as to why this would happen i am all ears.

Cheers

you may have an air leak some where. cover the air intake some more and observe what happens.

Not sure about the air intake part, but did you replace the fuel line?
They degrade with age, breaking off bits of rubber to re-clog your carb.

the air intake is completely closed up, so i must have a leak, but nothing in the air system was altered when i cleaned the carb and it did not seem to be affecting the performance at that point. will look into it though. as far as the fuel line i will have to check... want to say it was replaced about a year ago when i picked up the scoot.

thank you both for your consideration.

Sounds a little similar to a problem I had a while ago.

Today I took my LX150 out for a country ride. Was managing well at 90-100 kph (around 55-60 mph) when I suddenly lost power. The scooter would run at 20-30 kph, and anything faster would cause the engine to first speed up, then sputter, and then the scooter would start to lurch - all while remaining at the 20-30 kph.

On the roadside, I was able to check some things. Plenty of gas, and from a reputable station. Starts up immediately, and revs while on the centre stand. No obvious dislodged hoses, and the carb did not smell of excess gas. From a dead stop, it would pull away and speed up to 20-30 kph easily. Adding more throttle made the engine sound like it was revving faster, and the sputtering and lurching would then begin. it seemed quite content to putt along at 20kph as long as I didn't add more throttle.

Thank you Michael, since i have been cleaning up the carb i might have some floaters. will check that first. probably a good idea to run new fuel line and replace filter as well.

again and again, thank you.

problem solved
as it turns out i have a leak in my air box. several of the screws that hold the cover on the air filter we stripped and some were just plain missing. duct taped it just to get around for now, vespa dealer is only a couple of miles away so it will be easy for me to get new parts.

Thanks to all for the help.

p.s. if you are in or around the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the dealership on University and Lancaster in Fort Worth employs a wonderful mechanic named Robbie. Very knowledgeable and sweet as cupcake.

Cheers,

Great-- glad to hear you've got a solution.

And thanks very much for posting props for your mechanic. Very helpful-- Does he make long distance house calls?
