Hi All,

As you can tell I am a newbie on this board.

Have two question, I live in S. Cali and wanted to know if these two things are good to put into my 2008 GTS 250 ie.

1) Hub Oil- Amsoil 75W/90 Gear Oil
2) Engine Oil- Amsoil 10W-40

As far as the hub oil, I am going to just add some to the exisisting hub oil (I forgot my hub oil cap and drove it little yesterday causing some of the oil to spill throught the opening...DUH!!!) Is this OK to do or should I change the whole thing using a turkey baster (I read on this board)

Feedback is always appreicated.

Thanks in advance.

This is what Piaggio wants you to use:

Engine oil
SAE 5W-40, API SL, ACEA A3, JASO MA Synthetic oil

It's listed in your owners manual.

If your oil doesn't meet the Piaggio standards, AND you have an oil related engine failure Piaggio WILL NOT honor any warranty.

Regards
Harvey

Might as well change it out - not much more a bother than topping off (just adding draining the existing fluid)

Amsoil does market a 4 stroke scooter oil for the crankcase:

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/aso.aspx

Not sure if it's the same oil as you mention.

Keep an eye on the dip stick (when yo get a replacement) when you change or add hub oil. It's easy to overfill, and the pressure can blow your hub seal.

Shell Rotella is the US spec oil that seems cheapest and meets Piaggio specs.

I wouldn't worry too much about what hub oil you use. The gears are straight cut and simple so any old shit will do. Probably go for synthetic to be on the safe side, but any specs with a wider range than Piaggio specify would be absolutely spot on. GL4 or GL5 will do nicely.

My GT200 2005 is out of warranty...however, prior to purchasing I reviewed the Service Records. Scoot was maintained @ Dealer who also handled BMW MC's and 10-40W was used in their Vespa oil change.

I did call the Dealer to address and Service Manager indicated that's what they use for all Vespa Servicing...again they are an authorized Vespa Dealer. It may have to with the climatic conditions (San Jose, CA).

In addition, my location is even milder...Honolulu, HI and according to the local Vespa Dealer they recommend the 10-40W.

On the shelves at most local MC shops is 10-40W.

Believe if I want to stay within specs I could find someone who carries the Shell Rotella 5-40W. It is available...just got to find it stocked somewhere.

The difference between 5/40 and 10/40 is far less important than the other specs of the oil.

I'm not fussed if a workshop uses 10/40 as long as it otherwise meets or exceeds the other specifications. Now if I lived in an area where temperatures dipped well below 0C for any length of time then I'd be more concerned. I don't think So Cal is in such an area...

Thanks for all the feedback.

I've decided to go with the Motorcycle 10W-40, when I called the Amsoil technical service department they told me that it had more additives to protect the engine then the scooter oil.

And it exceeds the API SJ specification stated on the my GTS 250 manual so I think I am good to go unless someone can give me a reason to get a different oil.

But from this post and searching, I think all those who used Amsoil was quite satisfied with it.

Once again thanks for the feedback very much appreicated.
