I think this Karma thing is a form of abuse. It is discrimination in an overt way. Do you really think it is fair and can it reflect what it has been set up to do even if it was well intended. I didn't even know that this is what the thumbs were for and other then the locals, I am sure that many others don't either. Do you really think Jess for example with all those positive targets, is 6 times kinder, nicer, less intollerant, is a better person (or whatever we interpret these targets to be) then say the evil snakebike with one negative and soon to grow with his different opinions shot from the hip, take no prisoners attitude. Does that make snakebike a bad resource, evil, unkind, unworthy, I think not... this is not unlike tatooing peole with stars...... if you think about it. I think this needs a serious rethink...can this kind of rating system be bordering on a breach of human rights? How many of you wrote to Piaggio to thank them when you got your parts compared to those who had their scooters in the shop waiting. If you want a site with one opinion and one type of person then this will work and I also doubt that you will have any issues as this will be taken care of in the first ten minutes with gangs praying on those that dare to be different.

snakebite, I like you. I appreciate your candid communication. I think your culture has to do with it, and probably also a bit of your rebel/maverick attitude.
I'm a bit like you, definitely culture-formed, and also with a bit of maverick DNA. I paid for it when I came to America, where people are nice to your face but may stab you in the back. Okay, not all of them, but if you are candid and open to them, calling a spade a spade, you pay for it. And don't expect the same openness from them (ouch, that'll earn me some demerits, you watch*). That said, and pointing out that this is mainly a US-American forum, you just have to live with it. I shamefully admit that I have americanized to a certain degree, which is why I managed somehow to "earn" a small positive karma balance here. Gauging my contributions, and looking at my tone with my cultural background, I should be at +4.5. Hence my new avatar *Edit: Wow. I quietly withdraw my negative suspicion. ⚠️ Last edited by windbreaker on UTC; edited 1 time

There's probably technical limitations on making the shit small enough to fit, short of getting a graphic designer in, and that seems a bit OTT.

Sometimes those who have 'negative karma' are some of the most 'on the button' people here.
There are some sensitive folk about, that's all I'll say. This is 'just' a web-forum, right?

Meh. 95% of your negative karma comes entirely from one
As for the karma system itself, and why we have it: I could be an asshole and throw out all the bums who I personally dislike, but then I'd just be living down to expectations. Much better to have something tangible to point to, like a preponderance of votes indicating that everyone else wants to throw out the bums as well. Think of it as a bit of democracy in this otherwise dictatorial forum. As soon as I can manage to deal with the people stuffing the ballot boxes, we might just have a workable system.

It should be used to rate a topic or a helpful responce to a post, I see it as a good thing, it will help keep theads from Hijacking and rude responces. It will weed out the negitves.

snakebike wrote: By the way, are you not just a little embarressed, about the 4 1/2 you have In setting the scale between raw votes and number of targets, I wanted to make getting a half or a whole (or more) targets fairly achievable for a good number of users. Applying that scale to my own karma, though, would give me a solid five targets with lots left over, which would just be throwing gasoline on the fire. I compromised by setting the scale so that I only had four stars, but then I gained another half target when I announced the new karma indicators. I can't win. |

I still fester, snarling in my rat-hole. I actually find it quite fun 'treading daintly' here.
I have an intolerance to bull-shitters and those who spread FUD. I won't apologise for that, either, for everyone's sake. |
