In my younger days, I spent quite a lot of time building, racing, and destroying R/C cars and trucks. It occurred to me when trying to come up with a solution for keeping the EVAP cannister port on the carburetor open that an air filter for a gas-powered R/C vehicle might be just the ticket. They have tiny little carburetors, and as such, tiny little air filters.

I headed off to my local hobby shop that deals heavily in R/C stuff and looked at what they had to offer. Their smallest filter, I thought, might be just barely too big. As it turns out, it wasn't - it was perfect. I bought an HPI Racing Air Cleaner Set (P/N A860) and headed for home.

To make the installation work is quite simple:

1) Disconnect the EVAP hose from your carburetor.
2) Cut a piece of the hose off - 1-2 inches is all that's necessary.
3) Insert cut hose into filter & zip-tie tightly.
4) Place hose & filter assembly over open port on carburetor (where the EVAP hose was formerly connected.
5) Done!

Filtration is completely unecessary, euro models have no evap system and the carb is open to air...

Great recommendation and pics...will try to secure and use. I ended up picking up a plactic fuel line step down adapter (1/4" on one end and graduated on other)...slipped the 1/4' on one end of cut piece of tubing and affiex a foam cap on the end to air. Then cinched it down with tie cable...your hook up looks secure and utilizes an air filter (particulate filter).

Thanks!

BTW. I believe there's suppose to be (for lack of better words) Evap. Hose Mod #2. This is suppose to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank should the fuel line (overflow tube) from the filler cap downline gets flooded. Suppose to splice in the overflow tube with 1/4" to 1/4" coupler found this at Home Depot and add on 1/4" fuel line hose to drain / vent to road (?). Figured that this is more a vent than a drainage tube...so as long as you got it to vent to air you should be O.K. So you should be able to secure this vent hose in a horizontal or downward orientation within chasis / engine compartment Will be probably working on this this weekend and post pics.

/shoulder shrug...

I don't know what to say about that. For under $4, I have piece of mind that there's less chance of a phantom dirt particle finding its way in and clogging a jet at the exact wrong time. (and FWIW, I've had 2 clogged idle jets in the past 3 weeks, though I think that has more to do with fuel gumming up than actual dirt)

Masala- was it purchased at D&J?

I have been wanting to add a filter to my setup since I added a chunk of pillow foam to mine that was apparently too dense. Each time I took off from a stop the engine would gack, starved from air. The carb must use that port as part of the system for takeoffs.

Had to special order at hobbie shop that handles RC supplies...will be in next week. Indicated that it's foam and should be easy to clean out if necessary. ~$4.00. BTW...I noticed when you disconnect the evap. tube your connection to the carb. was a clear plastic tube...my GT200 was all black fuel line hose...no plastic tube connection.

Thanks for the advice.

No problem... It should work all the same. It's true that the filter element is foam, just like the air filter on our scooters. Any ol' filter oil will be just fine if/when you ever want to clean the little one.

Man! I went to D&J today. The filter is sold out and the R/C guy can't even order any until the end of August. Boo.

Tower Hobbies is a highly reputable online site you could order from, though I imagine there'd be shipping charges. In all honesty, I would venture a guess that a filter for any .12 or .15 nitromethane R/C engine should work.
