jess wrote: TB wrote: By way how did they do it...can you post a step by step and perhaps post in on Wiki???? Step 1: Spend all day in front of your computer Step 2: Since you can only rate any given user once per hour, look up their post history on the hour, every hour, and find a post you haven't rated yet. Rate it negative. Step 3: To hide your own negative bias, find someone who you can pile positive votes on. Look up their post history on the hour, every hour, and find a post of theirs you haven't rated yet. Rate it positive. Step 4: To hide your own negative ratings given by others, create a phantom account. Look up the post history of your main account on the hour, every hour, and find a post of yours that your phantom account hasn't rated yet. Rate it positive. Step 5: Repeat steps 1 through 4, day in and day out. If it's just MySQL then I can offer a hand writing the SQL code. |

You could still use the post karma for searching. I think you'll just end up with a lot of posts that give people a warm glow rather than the technically relevant posts. How about a technically useful button then?
karma = 0 for each user that voted for that person (+ or -) add up total karma by this user for person if total > 0 then ++karma if total < 0 then --karma |

I thought your post was healthy & refreshing and I gave it a thumbs up The anonymous nature of the karma rating system bothers me, so often when I give people a rating, I'll add a post about why But posting that I've just rated someone would invite the ratee to to return the favor, so I haven't been doing that... Although now that I see people advertising for karma, that may change

I think the idea of a public rating system can have the subtle effect of influencing post content and even posting numbers. It may cut down on fluff posts and probably make folks think twice before hitting submit. Good or bad? Who knows. I believe the days of spontaneity in posting are limited.
This is reminiscent of my 8th grade year in Catholic School, where we had to accumulate "citizenship" points to graduate, in addition to state scholastic requirements. There was a big chart on the wall that had every student listed and a line next to each name. Whenever a student did some kiss-ass thing in class, he or she would get a gold star sticker on the line I must confess that I was not a collector of many stars. (Gee, do ya think?) There was a girl in my class that I had the absolute hots for. One day, she spilled a bottle of purple ink on the floor. The nun went ballistic, because ours was the newest classroom and the floor tile was a pale green and her pride and joy. I jumped out of my desk and grabbed a bunch of paper towels. Down on hands and knees I went sopping up the purple ink which ended up in a smeary mess both on the floor and me. After the mess was cleaned up, the nun walked over to the score board and announced that she was taking stars away from the girl and giving them to me. She took her talon-like thumbnail and, in a swift right to left move, peeled off the whole row of stars next to the girl's name, and handed them to me to count, out loud. Then, she put the same number of stars next to my name. To the victors go the spoils, I guess. Every day I would look at that chart and see my ill-gotten gains. Those stars represented the slim chance I would ever have of getting close to the girl of my dreams. So, I earned a few stars without real merit. I was helping someone I cared about and was rewarded at her expense. Not enough to graduate, because, come school year end, I had to paint the convent in order to fill up my star line. How friggin illegal that was is astounding, but they could get away with stuff like that in the 50's. It made me who I am today. Sorry for the rant. Maybe it will get me half a target.

I don't think it will greatly affect the number of posts most people make. Everytime there has been an announcement about the Karma system, there has been an uptick in the use of the Karma system. Once the ballyhoo dies down so does the voting and behaviour then returns to what it always has been. Yes the targets will give a reminder that the Karma system exists, but I really don't think it will affect volume of posts.

UMMGOODI was a child of the 60's My dad even had custom guns made for me so i could target and skeet shoot at 10 yrs old I had all kinds of courses on how to use etc. Since my dad was 6"'6" his mere presence invoked authority i obeyed and was never careless. Today i'd probably be in a foster home Times were different back then, my mom stayed at home and i obeyed the rules. Small school i think we had a little over 50 kids in my class and we were the largest class
