Yes, I did a search for who makes or cuts keys for the MP3 for the last 6 months and didn't come up with anything.

Last I remember, there was someone here on the forum who can cut a copy of the key, but not the FOB electronics. I don't really need the FOB and could really do without that bulky portion of the key.

Anyhow, does anyone remember who used to make these and if they are still doing it?

If not, anyone know where else I could go besides the dealer to get a key copy cut?

Think the key is going to be the same size or at least close to the same size.

From what I understand of the 'immobilser' circuit on the bike, you have to have a key with the approproiate RF tag (or whatnot) implanted and programmed. That means a key with the fob, or something similar. Perhaps the fob portion could be left on the bike and the key removed? I dunno, sounds like one for jimc...

Thanks jimc and jimh, Often times on this board members refer to a post (as I did) and AT TIMES (yes I am shouting) I wish it was a much more narrow answer. I am still learning.

Appreciate all the answers everyone!

It's always nice to have a spare and ultimately, I want a key copy that can fit inside my key storage lock box for those days I go surfing!

Thanks again!

Any key shop that can do laser cut (like a BMW) keys should be able to do it.

These days that's not the problem so much (it used to be). The main problem is finding a reliable blank. Jimh had a hell of a job finding a reasonably reliable supplier - at not a small cost to himself.

Actually just because they can do a BMW or Lexus doesn't mean they can cut the MP3 key. I got the blank from jimh and tried to have folks out here cut the key - was a stupid weanie about shipping my one and only key to jimh. The locksmith did his best and it sort of worked but not always. The cuts were too thick and they weren't able to make the tiny turns the same way our keys are cut. So my suggestion is to pm Jimh and send your master (brown) to him.

Thanks all. Yes i will cut and clone your key for free or a cup of tea (Tetley of course).

I have a new machine arriving on Tuesday/Wednesday.

I will only cut MP3 and Moto guzzi keys. Over the past year i have helped a few members with their car keys Audi, Bmw, VW etc that played a toll on my milling bits and cutters.

I will even cut your factory keys for free you don't even need to buy my blanks.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

source for spare keys?
Hello All!

Just bought a MP3 250 last weekend and had a blast riding it back from the seller's place to my house - a total of 100 miles! What a joy to ride! This bike is for my wife; my bike is a Honda VTX1800. But, this bike is fun.

Well, I have been crazy reading all these posts. What I figure from all these helpful comments is that I should have spare keys.

Well, I called Jimh today and was told that the MP3 keys are no longer available. I have both master and service keys so I'm not in a hurry. What are people doing for spare keys these days?

Key Shop in Newport Beach
I had Balpot Lock and Safe cut my MP3 spare and it works perfectly! They are right around the corner from Vespa Newport off of PCH. It was $35, and done in about 5 minutes.
Worth the drive!

I called Vespa Pomona and they referred me to them, since they are pretty far away, I figured there weren't that many places around. Balport says they have people mail them keys and they never get to see if they work, but since I rode there they came out and and made sure that it worked before they let me leave.
Very Helpful!

Had one issue with a key, jimh said send it back. Have not gotten any reply at all. very unusual from him, he is very astoute about this. Phone messages and emails for the last month, no reply. Was starting to wonder if he was hurt or on vacation. Now you mention no keys available anymore. Wondering why he just never replied though.

I never got a spare, very depressed for waiting so long.

Now I have to buy the key from Piaggio

Think I may know someone who can cut it.

Wow, that's odd about no response from jimh. I ordered up my key a few months back and it was fast and accurate with very pleasant service. I wonder like G03 if something has happened to him.

Sorry for the Typo, my keyboard is malfunctioning on my laptop!

I thought you had a spare key and wanted it cut.... and since you were in Southern California.... my bad!
Still, they are a good resource for the cutting part. The spare key came from the dealer. [/b]

JimH made a spare for my MP3 and more recently for my BV500 and his turn-a-round time is fast, his keys work first time and he only charges a very reasonable fee for it.
We need more people (dealers) like him.
