Ok, I checked Wikki and the Technical Docs (as well as Search), but could find any reference to the speedo cable.
So here goes..

My speedo needle wobbles on acceleration until about 40mph, then it becomes smooth. Here at work, with Daisy at home.. I remembered that the dood I bought the bike from just had the front tyre replaced as he had a puncture. Does the speedo cable have to be detached to remove the front tyre/wheel?. If so, the cause of my issue could be that the shop did not re-attach the cable correctly (and maybe did not apply any lube).

What do the experts think? Bike has just under 2k miles.

No, the wheel removes without affecting the speedo cable.

It may be the cable needs to be lubricated, the plastic gear in the hub may have to be replaced (this was the problem on my GTS):
nOOb question sorry about the speedometer

Regardless, if your bike is still under warranty, I would have the dealer repair it.

Regards

To lube the cable disconnect it at the hub at the front wheel, remove the headset cover with the headlight, disconnect the speedometer cable and pull it out the top as far as it will go. Then lube the cable as you feed it back into the casing. Reattach it at the hub making sure it is completely in the hub and the cable seats properly. Then reconnect at the speedo end being sure the cable also seats at that end. Jack the front end up slightly and spin the front tire to be sure it is working before you put the headset back together. That being said, I doubt that the cable is your problem. If it was the cable needing lubrication you would get a bouncy needle, if the cable was broken you would not get any needle movement. Sounds like it is the speedometer itself or possibly a problem with the hub at the front wheel. Keep us posted as what it turns out to be but I'm betting on failure of the actual speedometer.
I have a cable luber that is designed for throttle cables, it seems that I should use that and hopefully it will take care of it. Not sure if my bike is under warranty (I bought it used) but the dealer will be able to tell me with the VIN numbers.
