Went to start my 2005 GT200L and nothing. Lights work, key turned on, kill switch off and nothing. Last week same deal but by turning the key on and off a couple of times it started but no such luck now. Could it be a defective ignition switch? Loose wired or connections? Scoot has 49xx miles and been babied. I'm stumped. How do I determind what the problem is and how difficult to fix for an average skilled guy? How do you access the ignition switch and associated wires?

Sounds like it may be a faulty ignition switch.
First, check the battery with a multimeter to see if it the charge is all the way up. It it is, since you've had an intermittent problem, it's most likely the ignition switch. You can take it out and see if a wire is loose or frayed. Other than that, you'd have to install a new one. It's easy to get behind the glovebox and check for a loose or frayed wire. See here: https://modernvespa.com/forum/topic7819 P.S.: Have you tried to start it holding each of the brake levers separately? It could possibly be a bad switch that engages and allows the scooter to start when you pull the brake lever. ⚠️ Last edited by XLR8 on UTC; edited 1 time

Is the immobilizer light (The red light on the instrument panel that flashes when the key isn't in) turning off when you insert the key? Is it doing any weird flashing when the key's in?

The immobilizer flashes as it should prior to inserting the key and goes off once the key in inserted. Man it looks like quite a deal to replace the ignition switch what with removing the front covers and leg shield and what not. Looks like I may be in for a trip to the shop and let the pros deal with the cause and correction.

I learned to remove all the pieces by using the link that I posted and have done it several times to install accessory power outlets on two GTS' and a GTV. I can now remove everything in approximately 7 to 10 minutes and put it back together in another 7-10 minutes.
It is not difficult. If you are the least bit mechanical minded, you won't have any problem. If the problem is NOT a faulty brake light/start switch, it may simply be a wire that has come loose on the rear of the ignition switch. Good luck to you. |

I had a similar problem a couple of times. I had apparently over rotated the key, just a bit too far to the right. Once I backed off a bit, it was fine.
So far I haven't had it happen again. Probably just a fluke, but worth a look. I may be having to replace an ignition switch in the future myslef. |

Victory! Turned out to be a fuse and very simple to replace. New question is why?

Fuses can go bad..................but usually blow for a specific reason. You should find out what that specific fuse goes to and check the wiring to make sure that a wire hasn't rubbed the protective insulation away against metal on the body somewhere so it won't happen again.
