I got my 400 back from the dealer today. Here is what the problem was -- a faulty voltage regulator which fried the headlight relay and sent all kinds of weird signals out. Piaggio paid for everything, including a new battery.

Bike rides great now and I'm a happy camper again.

Word to the wise -- if the red light is blinking, it has nothing to do with your butt on or off the seat.
