Amazing images from his on board camera, then the shot of his helmet http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1202114/The-moment-F1-driver-Felipe-Massa-knocked-unconscious-flying-debris-Grand-Prix-qualifier.html

I hope he pulls through and is soon back racing.

Is this from qualifying today? You might not want to post F1 results in the subject. I know it's just qualifying, and you didn't give away who got pole. However, I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. We had to finish watching today's Tour de France stage, since tomorrow is the last. Maybe put "spoiler" in the subject if you are going to talk about a sporting event that not everyone may have seen yet. Thanks

This is horrible news. I have it recorded and I planned on watching the qualifying tomorrow morning. God I hope he is alright. Brazil should be very proud to have such a driver like Massa.

Gee sorry I didn't realise. By everyone, do you mean the whole planet or just continental USA?
BTW, I don't think there was any mention of results, qualifying or other in the title????
There is a big F1 following on this Forum. The injury to Massa was certainly worthy of an NSR posting.

Must admit I don't feel comfortable with papers (or people) showing the faces of people that have been involved in horrific accidents. Just a personal opinion.

I did mean continental US by everyone Unfortunately, we are always behind on these things due to the time lag. I agree that there was no qualifying results in the subject. However, if I were a big Massa fan, it might prevent me from really even watching qualifying, except for the crash. It wasn't a blatantly bad thing to do. I was just trying to nicely warn people about us poor souls in the US, who are always behind Plus, with TiVo, I never watch anything when it comes on.

I have not been on this forum long, so I was not sure if people knew about the spoiler thing. I also have not seen many or any F1 posts since I have joined.

Maybe if you had put the subject as "Big F1 crash in qualifying", then it wouldn't have ruined anything for anyone. If someone wanted to know what happened, they could then read the thread. Otherwise, they could ignore the thread until they had watched qualifying. No real biggie. I agree that the subject matter is definitely appropriate and worthy of this forum. BTW, I hope Massa is okay.

So we watched qualifying finally. I thought they had learned something from Senna. Why doesn't the medical team immediately go to the seen of any and all accidents? This is what happens in IRL in the US. The medical team truck is parked right behind the safety car. They both start coming out before a guy even hits the wall sometimes. I am also curious what happened to his helmet to allow his skull to fracture. His face shield was intact, but it's ripped away on the side where he was hit. Does anyone know what brand of helmet Massa wears? It doesn't look like an Arai. I hope he's okay. It seems very precarious right now.

Massa wears Schuberth helmets, although I don't think it made any difference. The spring from Barrichello's car seems to have impacted the edge of Massa's visor. I, too, was shocked at the medical car delay. That kind of delay is unheard of in open-wheel racing in the states.

Thanks for the info on the helmet. It seems that the medical team is always delayed in F1 races. It took them forever to get to Ralph Schumacher at Indy. Luckily, he was okay, and some of the best racing trauma doctors were just a few minutes away.

It didn't bother me. I wanted to see how the helmet held up. I would be fine if his face were blurred out. My interest is purely technical, not morbidity or voyeurism.

The spring weighed approx 1kg (2lbs) and hit him in the head at approx 170mph. I don't think the type of helmet would make any difference.

It was more the Daily Mail picture in the link that I thought was in poor taste. A close up photo of someone's face just after they'd been hit by the above just wasn't necessary - to me anyway, I have a perfectly good imagination.

Would you please stop spilling the beans? I hven't had a chance to watch it yet. Now you spoiled it for me.
Maybe, next time, put a warning in your subject line, will you? Razz emoticon
