Hi am proud new owner of a 2002 ET2. Its playground has been London so is a bit dented and scratched but i'll give her a makeover in time. I am very confused though with the oil situation. OK so she is a 2 stroke and looking at the manual is says there is a reservoir near the fuel tank cap, i dont see this?! Behind the back wheel I have found the dipsctick which shows enough oil however further up the bike on the left side in front of the jump start lever is a reservoir with a sight glass and this is empty - this is for oil I presume, what kind of oil? Is this what they call the hub oil? And is this not what the dipstick measures? Also will I need to add oil directly in to the fuel tank? If so how much and how often? It doesnt look like the oil warning light works, doesnt light up on ignition, is that a pain to DIY fix? Many many thanks in advance!! Tom

Hi Tom, welcome to MV.
This is explained in the user manual, with pictures. The bit you want is is the 1st part, chapter 2 "Operation": http://www.wotmeworry.org.uk/manuals/ET2/ |

Lift the seat up and you see two caps. One says oil and the other says gas. Use 2 stroke oil and use good gasoline.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Unfortunately still baffled, as there aint an oil cap under the seat. The log book says Et2 as does the badge on the bike and its got the 50mph max speed. I'm gonna pop in to a local scooter workshop and have them take a look at my hybrid!

Apparently there is such a beast as an ET2 4 tempi (four stroke)

Nightwing - heh - if you only knew how much of a gnat's arse I care about bloody karma.
Tom, you've asked genuine intellible questions, and you're a fellow Londoner, so I've tried to answer with my sub-set of skills. Now if you had just kept repeating a question and proved to have minimal ability to absorb clue then the outcome may have been different. ![]() So it may be an ET4 then? Well-well. Your initial confusion was justified. |

Thank goodness for being a Londoner! OK, so it is not a new species but an ET4 50cc! I drained the whatever oil (black) was left and topped up with the 800mls needed. think theres an oil strainer but will look at that another time. Haynes manual in the post today so fingernals aching to be blackened! thanks gang

I have the remains of a 4 stroke ET2 at home. I _think_ it has the sight glass for the engine oil (it certainly does NOT have a dip stick...) - but I'll check that when I get home...
Anyway, if there is no oil cap near the petrol cap, I think it must be a four stroke. It has a I've attached the image from the 2 stroke manual that shows both fillers next to the battery cover... Whereabouts in London are you? Might help to locate someone locally that can help you. Bob ![]() Extract from manual for the 2 stroke ET2 showing the two fillers

ET2 50
Dear Bob,
Thx for the super fast reaction! My `Bella` must be a 2 stroke (as they say). Under the seat I have the oil and the gasoline cap next to each other, just like on the picture that you attached for me. So I am looking for a non-existed Oil Dipstick and / or sight glass to see somethint/anything. I`m from Malta and we have a Piaggio Service however they are not very `friendly`and as a woman I`m pretty sure I must take a man with me when I go. However I want to learn to do certain things my own for sure as I won`t sell that bike ever! Thank you for your help I`ll keep looking for the solution Bridgette |

OK.
What you may not have realised is that the engine bearings are lubricated in fundamentally different ways on 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines... This is because the 2 stroke engine uses the bottom of the piston to pump the fuel/air mixture through the "crankcase" (the part of the engine where the crankshaft rotates, under the piston) up through the ports into the cylinder where it is burnt. This means that you cannot have a "sump" full of oil to lubricate the bearings, so the oil is mixed into the petrol instead. Early 2 stroke engines simply had the oil and the petrol "pre-mixed" before it went into the tank. Later ones (like the ET2) hold the oil in a tank and a metered amount is pumped into the petrol as it goes from the tank, through the carburetor into the engine. On a 4 stroke engine, the "sump" contains the oil, and the oil level is above the level of the sight glass (or, on other types of engine, the dipstick is long enough for its end to be submerged in the oil) so you can see how full it is. So, if you have a 2 stroke, there won't be a sight glass or dipstick, but you will have the second filler. You will also have a warning light on the speedo to tell you when to put more 2 stroke oil into the tank. Does that help? Bob |

I hope this is clear - if you need instructions to make sure the pump is working let me know. But stop riding until you've confirmed there is 2-stroke oil in the tank! Hope this helps |

Bella - cracky sound ;)
Dear Gentlemen,
thank you for all your replies and suggestions! I was afraid that I put too much oil. However as the oil level is going down it is better and the VESPA sounds better too. As I have a 2stroke ET2 50 as you said there is no oil dipstick, no glass to see the level but where I put the oil only. The level is lower however I still have the sharp sound. I noticed that when the surface of the road changes - the sounds changes so pretty much I have to see what`s loose on the bike, probably the silencer again ;( Thank you for all your comments as I can learn from them! Now I`ll look for a guy who can teach me to fix/keep the bike in shape. Good day Londoners Bridgette |
